RECENT OUTREACHES NEW YEARS EVE, SHREVEPORT LA New Years Eve is a great opportunity for Christians to hit the streets to share the gospel. New Years Eve is a big party night for many lost souls. There are churches that will have their own New Years Eve parties, especially for their youth groups, and maybe will invite unbelievers to attend. But lets get serious. Sinners don’t want to go to a church party for News Years Eve. It would be better for churches to have outreaches rather than parties. We should be going out to the bars and clubs with the gospel of Jesus Christ. I went out to the Red River District of Shreveport Lousianna, which is where many of their bars, clubs, and casinos are. It seemed to me that many people came from all over to go to the “Eldorado” Casino. As the night time approached, the people started hitting the streets to go to the bars and clubs. That was our opportunity to preach Jesus Christ! There is a particular wall that we have stood on before that has lots of people walking in front of it on the sidewalk. It seems to be a pretty busy area, especially during the beginning of the night. In fact, that is the same place that the Police will come and block off a street because of the amount of people that walk through there. When we stand on the wall we hold our banners, which automatically captures attention. Some people will come to talk with us just because of the signs. But many people will just continue on going to the bar or club. Therefore, we try to master the 30 second sermon. We will try to say a few quick points to plant the seed of the gospel. For example as a crowd walks by, obviously dressed for the club, we will say to them, “I hope you guys aren’t out here to sin tonight. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is everlasting life through Jesus Christ.” Or sometimes something simple like, “God is going to judge your life. Get ready. You will die and give account of your life to God. Give your life to Jesus Christ. Beg God for mercy and pardon.” It is my hope that we startle sinners as they carelessly head out to live wicked, that these sayings will disturb their conscience and awaken them to their danger. Some people may question the effectiveness of street preaching, but saying something is much better than saying nothing. The gospel was meant to be preached, not kept secret. What did get a response from crowds as they walked by was when we started saying, “Happy New Year!” They would instantly respond back by saying the same. We would then say, “What is your new year resolution?” But nobody really responded to that. So we would say, “It should be to forsake your sin and follow Jesus” or something along those lines, exhorting them to come to Jesus. Certainly gave them somehing to think about for the New Year. Of course, most of the people going out to party were telling us that they are Christians already. They said that they will be in Church on Sunday. Girls will walk by in very tight and revealing clothing and yet claim that they are church-going Christians. I sure hope they don’t dress like that for church! We always exhort them by saying that a real Christian is someone that loves and obeys Jesus. As I already said, at the beginning of the night we stand on a certain wall with a busy sidewalk. But later on in the night the crowds are in line waiting to get into the bars and clubs. So as the night progresses we move around to make sure that we are where the people are. And we are never short of conversations. When people see our signs and t-shirts with a clear biblical message, they come up to us to talk with us. It is very good to get to the party crowds while they are still sobor. As they are waiting in the lines to get into these sinful places, we stand and preach the gospel. I can recall one man in particular who came up to talk with me. He was sobor and in his right mind. But he seemed very upset. He asked if I had any contact information. So I gave him my card that has my phone number and email address. He said that he had recently gone through a divorce, that the family he is staying with are believers, and that he is really close to becoming a Christian. He had to go but he had my contact information. I pray that our presentation of the gospel helps him to make up his mind to be a Christian! CAR PROBLEMS ON THE ROAD I was on my way to Kilgore College to start off the new semester when I got a flat tire! At first I thought it was a minor set back. I planned on putting on the spare and continuing the course. But when I tried to start the car to move it to a better position to change the tire, the car wouldn’t start! I popped the hood and could see right through to the tire. It looked to me like there was some damage caused under the hood with wiring and other things. So I had to call for a tow truck and have it hauled off to a machanic shop. This was not only a set back for the start of my campus ministry for the new semester, but also to our financees. The insurance did come through to help cover some of the repairs, because we had run over some type of animal, but they did not cover everything. We have been praying that the Lord would help provide through the body of Christ. KILGORE COLLEGE, TX In 2005-2007 I would preach regularly at Kilgore Jr. College. At first I would use their “free speech” area and go through their permit process, but as their policies became more restrictive in regards to how much time you could speak, I abandoned their free speech area and permit for the nearby public sidewalk. As it turned out, their public sidewalk was a better location anyways. And there was no permit to obtain or time restrictions to abide by. I had some really good open air meetings there in the past but had not been back there since I moved out of the area in 2007. But now that I have moved back to East Texas, I plan on preaching there regularly again. I went right back to where I used to preach and the weather was so good that there were many people walking around. I had no signs, banners, or gospel t-shirt, but with just my Bible and my voice was I was able to draw a crowd. It didn’t take long to get the attention of the students. All I had to do was preach against getting drunk, smoking blunts, premartial sex, homosexuality, and Obama. I warned the students of the judgment and wrath of God and pointed them to Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins. I preached the problem and the solution very plainly. Nevertheless, there were those who accused me of only preaching the negative and not the positive, of preaching an unbalanced message, etc. I greatly emphasised God’s forgiveness, grace, love, and mercy through Jesus Christ, so it is my belief that those people just had selective hearing. I think that some people’s opinion of a “balanced” message is one that really is unbalanced; one that does not include any wrath or judgment at all. But I argued that only those who are under God’s wrath are in need of God’s mercy; that only those who deserve to go to hell are in need of salvation through Jesus Christ. After I had been preaching for a little while a Police Officer came up to me and asked for my student ID. When I told him that I was not a student he said that I would need a visitors pass. I argued that I was on the city sidewalk and was not actually on the campus and therefore would not need a visitors pass from the campus. The Officer said that he wasn’t sure about that so he took me to their Chief to talk about it with him. I explained to the Cheif that I used to preach on that sidewalk almost every week almost 5 years ago and that the Cheif of Police back then even spray painted a line in the sidewalk as to where the public easement was. He said that he would look into it and get back to me, but in the meantime requested that I get a visitors pass. So I went to the Visitor Center and gave them my name. They wrote my name down on a name badge and gave it to me. So I went back out to the sidewalk and began preaching again. My original crowd had dispersed by now but I was able to draw them in again. Eventually the Chief of Police came back out and said that he spoke with the previous Chief on the phone. He said that I was on the public easement and would be fine to speak there from now on. The City newspaper heard on the Police scanner that there was a preacher at Kilgore College. So a Journalist from the newspaper came out to cover the story. He took some pictures and interviewed a few students. He was actually a friend of mine that I went through a Christian internship with back in 2002-2003. In fact, he was there with me when I first started open air preaching. Now he is a Journalist in Kilgore. The City Paper did feature a picture of me preaching with a small subcaption and the campus newspaper said that they would be doing an article themselves as well. The campus paper had covered my outreaches in the past. At the end of the open air meeting there were two students who spoke with me in conversation. One said that he was an atheist who didn’t believe in God or the gospels. I argued that the proof of the infinite is the existence of the finite, since by law of cause and effect the finite could not exist without a cause. And the first cause, by necessity, must be self-existent. And I argued that our cause must necessarily be greater than us, and therefore cannot be some unintelligent, impersonal, thing or energy. And I argued that the Gospels and the New Testament Epistles were the written testimonies of credible witnesses. I explained that the Apostles testified to what they had seen and heard, that they didn’t merely hope or belief that Jesus rose from the dead but all claimed to have eye witnessed it. And they were willing to seal their testimony with their own blood. I went on to explain how in the court of law, any testimony that a witness gives in his own favor actually has the tendency to discredit his testimony. There would be a suspicious of motives. However, any testimony that a witness gives against his own favor actually yeilds credibility to his testimony. The suspicious of lying for ones own benefit is removed. And since the testimony of the Apostles put them at odds with the Roman Empire and with their own brethren the Jews, who ultimately did make martyrs out of the Early Church, you could not ask for a more credible witness than what God has provided in the Bible. The atheistic student still insisted that he had no proof of God and no reason to believe in the Bible. I have noticed from long experience that atheists typically continue on in their dream world where there is no God, despite all of the obvious evidence. They have a precommitment to their worldview and are not really governed by reason and evidence but rather by preference. Ultimately they are sinners who don’t want God to rule over them. The other student, however, who was talking with me had a very different heart. He admitted that what I was saying was very reasonable. He asked me where I learned to preach because he said I was very well spoken. He said, “You are the first preacher that I ever cared to listen to.” When I was preaching I invited the students to a Church that I will be speaking at on January 29th. This student brought that up to confirm the location and said that he might make it. TYLER JUNIOR COLLEGE, TX The guy with the funny hat made a sign that said, “I’m with stupid” with an arrow pointed at me while I was preaching. It was not a very original sign. I’ve seen better. Its sad that this was his only contribution to our discussion about the Bible. He didn’t have anything more intelligent to say. I really don’t expect much from college students today anymore. However, I think that this student did help me in drawing a crowd. Since this was a new semester there were certain students that had not seen me before. Its good to make a biblical impression the first week of classes! I’m trying to help them start off this new year right. However, there was the typical heckling and mocking. A few students did ask some good and genuine questions. One student asked why God gave us free will since now there is so much sin in the world. I explained that God took the risk of granting man free will, knowing that it was possible for man to rebel against His will, because without freedom of choice there can be no love in the universe. The very reason that God created us was so that there would be a loving relationship between God and man. If God did not grant us a free will in creation, therefore, there would be no possibility of man fulfilling God’s purpose in man’s creation. God had good reasons and good motives in taking the risk of giving men free will. One man came and listened to me for a while. I could tell by the way that he was dressed that he was not a student. He came up to me afterward and said that he was a local Pastor. His wife works at the campus and he sometimes comes here for that reason. He said that he has heard me preaching in the past as well. He wanted my contact information he said, “And we’ll see where the Lord leads.” Then he had to go. It is always my prayer that my outreaches will encourage and inspire the body of Christ to do the work of evangelism. WEST END, DALLAS TX The “West End” of the city of Dallas is a bustling place full of people going to and fro. This is the bus/train section of the West End. We arrived just in time for the burst of evening traffic. Many people take the trains and busses to get to work and across the city. Out of all the street corners in Dallas that you can preach on, I have found this corner to be the best after my nine years of experience in street preaching in Dallas. We lifted up our voices and our banner to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. It looked like a lot of teenagers just sit around and hang out at this particular corner. So from the very beginning we already had a crowd to preach to. And every ten minutes a so a train would come through and drop off a large crowd of people. There is also a McDonalds on this corner which wasn’t there before which seems pretty busy, and a new apartment buildling also which we can bounce our voices off of. The acoustics are therefore very good at this spot, except for the occasional noise from the trains and vehicles. My friend from East Texas came out with me to preach. It was his first time street preaching in Dallas. I always enjoy showing street preachers new great places for street preaching. I still can’t believe that it was nine years ago when I took my first group of Christians into Dallas for street preaching. The years go by faster and faster as I get older. But I know that despite how many street preachers have gone to this city, it is still largely unreached. There are approximately 1,299,543 people in the city of Dallas. That means that if a street preacher reached 500 people a day, it would still take 2,599 days to reach the entire city. That is 7 years! Lord, raise up more street preachers in every city! When it comes to the Police in this location, it seems to be hit or miss. It all depends on what time or what day you try to preach there. I have had some Police Officers walk right by me without saying anything. While at other times, I have had Police Officers tell me that this area was private property and therefore that we needed to leave. Now with the new McDonalds there, I figured it would be easier to argue that it was public property. During this particular outreach we did have a Police Officer tell us that the area was privately owned and therefore that we needed to go further down the street. I asked him about a particular city street light pole, as to whether that was public and if we could stand next to that. He just looked at it and road away without answering. He knew what we knew, that it was obviously public. So we moved a few feet over to where the city street light pole was, which was also next to some newspaper vending boxes, and preached from there without further problems from the Dallas Police. SUNDANCE SQUARE, FORT WORTH TX Sundance Square in Fort Worth TX has a very busy nightlife on the weekends that attracts a large variety of different kinds of people. There are young people, middle aged people, and elderly people that come out on Friday and Saturday nights. Some of them come out simply to enjoy the resturaunts and the stores while others are out to party at the bars and clubs. It is a much safer and diverse place to preach than the other club districts that we preach at in other cities. I always enjoy preaching there. I used to street preach in Sundance Square every weekend back in 2005 and 2006. But when we lived on the road I only got to come through maybe once a year. Now that I live in East Texas again, I will be able to come out more often. Though it seems that there are plenty of street preachers that go out to Sundance Square on the weekends now. That is why I started going to the Red River District in Shreveport instead. I’m the only street preacher that goes out to those bars and clubs, except for any street preachers that I might bring with me! I have the whole place to myself! And both Sundance Square and The Red River District are about the same distance from my house. Although the Shreveport nightlife is much more dangerous than Sundance Square in Fort Worth. One plus that I always liked about Fort Worth is their amplification laws. Street preachers can preach on a bullhorn or an amplifier until something like 10:30pm. That is a great help to us. We usually preach for hours at a time and we can really wear out our voices, especially street preaching because we have to compete with all the noise. So we brought our bullhorn with us and preached to the whole block easily! Our message was plain and simple. “You know in your heart that you have broken the law of God. You are guilty. You deserve to be punished by a holy God. You deserve to go to hell. But God doesn’t want you to go to hell. God sent Jesus Christ to die for you. Jesus shed His holy blood for all of you. Through Jesus Christ you can escape the punishment that you deserve. But you need to repent of your sins and turn to Jesus. Cry out to Jesus Christ tonight! Beg God for mercy! Plead with God for pardon! He is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked but that you turn and live. The Bible says let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts and return unto the Lord and He will abundantly pardon. God is calling all men everywhere to repent because He has appointed a day when He will judge the world in righteousness by the man Jesus Christ. Its heaven or hell when you die. Make sure you make the right choice. God sets before you life and death, therefore choose life. Choose you this day who you will serve.”

A PERSONAL REQUEST FROM JESSE Dear Friends, I wanted to write a personal support letter to my friends and supporters to raise up the necessary funds for me to go to Connecticut to meet some of my immediately family, for the first time. Since I was 3 years old I have not seen my father. For the past 25 years I have wanted to get in touch with him but he has been very hard to find. He has alcohol problems and is often homeless. Recently, I was informed that he was in prison and so I wrote him a letter. I was very excited when he wrote me back. In the letter he told me how to spell my older brothers last name. I had not seen him in about 20 years. I just got in touch with my brother through the internet. He has spent some time prison but has recently gotten out and wants to live a better life. I myself came to know the Lord after spending some time locked up. My father also told me the names of my younger brother and sister. I had heard before that I might have a younger brother and sister, but never knew their names or how to get a hold of them. I have not gotten in touch with both of them. My brother is with an adoptive family right now and is 18 but my sister is 14 and is in the foster care system. My father, sister, and two brothers, are all in Connecticut but I am living in Texas. So I want to make a trip up to Connecticut to meet them, get to know them, and to be a Christian witness in their lives. A plane ticket would cost me about $230.00 to fly up there just myself. If I were to drive up there with my wife and two small children it would cost me about $600 in gas there and back. I’m asking my friends and supporters to help finance me to travel to Connecticut so that I can meet my family and witness to them about the Lord and what He has done in my life. While I am there I will also preach on the streets and campuses. Particularly, I plan on preaching at the University of Connecticut, Central Connecticut State University, and Yale University. Walking the Christmas Parade Route…. PREACHING!

RECENT OUTREACHES Lousianna State University, Shreveport A friend of mine flew down to Texas from his home in California with his wife to preach with me. I wanted to take him out to some good campuses to have a good open air experience. Another local brother was also available to come out and join us, so the four of us went out to LSU in Shreveport to evangelize. I have preached at LSU in Baton Rouge and I have preached at the Casinos, bars, and clubs in Shreveport, but I had never preached at LSU in Shreveport. I was not sure what the campus policies were regarding free speech. LSU in Baton Rouge is an open campus when it comes to free speech, so I assumed the policies were the same. To make sure I contacted a friend of mine who had preached there before and he confirmed that LSU in Shreveport was also an open campus. It wasn’t too long before the campus Police became aware of our presence. After all, we were standing in the middle of campus preaching loudly with banners. The Police came to talk with us and showed us where the “free speech” area was. We were standing on the sidewalk in front of the Student Union but they wanted us to stand on the grass. They even blocked off the grassy area from the sidewalk! I actually prefer this because it keeps the crowds back. Without any barrier, the crowds will eventually circle around us which makes it harder to preach to everyone. What was strange was how the Police asked for our ID and took pictures of us with a camera. We should have the right to exercise free speech anonymously. I am concerned over the direction that our country is going. With the help of our banners, we gathered a crowd of students asking questions before we even started open air preaching. I cannot stress to much how helpful signs and banners are for open air preaching. They are so beneficial that I almost never preach without them anymore. We were not on the campus very long, maybe only ten minutes, when we were heckled by two lesbians. That shows the sad state of affairs on these universities even in the Bible belt. The students had seen preachers before because my friend has visited this campus. Nevertheless, the students were still pretty upset at certain times. They were certainly not hard and caloused. What we were saying about sin, judgment, and hell certainly disturbed them. They stayed for hours to discuss these issues with us. Most of them were making excuses and arguments for their sin. But the word of God was preached and they were given an opportunity to receive it. Tyler Junior College, TX I am always trying to think of creative ways to get people’s attention on biblical truth and to find good ways to communicate the gospel to the general public. During the Halloween season I kept seeing Halloween customes in the stores. I have known different preachers use customs to help get attention and communicate a message. One friend of mine even dressed up in a cow outfit to preach at a Hindu festival! Another one dressed up like the devil and stood outside the Mormon Tabernacle during their huge annual event, endorsing the church! These kind of things remind me of what the prophets used to do to get attention and communicate a message from God. Jeremiah wore an animal yoke around his neck. Its true that Isaiah did not wear a custom. But that is because he wore nothing at all! Anyways, my friend who flew in from California brought a devil mask with him after hearing me talk about how useful they might be. When I was preaching to the students, he would sometimes put the devil mask and contradict what I was saying. For example, if I was preaching that homosexuality is a sin and should be repented of, he would put the mask on and tell the students that it was ok and they can keep doing it. It made a point in a dramatic sort of way. Or if somebody started heckling me and contradicted what I had been preaching, he would put the mask on and tell the crowd that he agreed with my heckler. It was funny and good. I recognized a lot of the same students from previous outreaches and previous years. Our continual presence on this campus, I pray, will make a lasting impression upon their hearts and minds for Jesus Christ. Texas A&M in Commerce Six years ago, I preached at Texas A&M at College Station and had a great time there. On my drive back home from Canada, I noticed that Texas A&M had a campus in Commerce, TX. This was only about an hour from where we now live. I was very excited to see that there was another local campus that I could regularly preach on, especially a campus that does not have any other campus preachers preaching on it. Before I went to the campus I went online and searched google for maps of the campus so that I could become familar with the layout and pick the best spot for open air preaching. I also looked for public streets that run through the campus, just in case the police tried to give me a hard time. I wasn’t sure if this campus would be open to free speech like the campus in College Station was. As it turned out, the best place to preach on campus was right behind their huge new Student Union building where all the students go during lunch time, which also happened to have a city street running right next to it. I decided that it would be the best place to preach for three main reasons. First, it was right next to the cafe where the students get their food for lunch so it would have a lot of foot traffic. Second, the city street was right there in case the police try to kick me off campus. And thirdly, there was a big tree that provided shade for me and the crowd for the hours we would be preaching. A good size crowd did form rather quickly. They had never seen preaching like this before. At first the crowd was very calm and respectful. Some of the Christians on campus were sayig “amen” to my message about Christ. But after the first hour or so the crowd started heckling until eventually, they were pretty upset. What it came down to was that they loved their sin and they didn’t like me telling them to stop it and obey Christ. My friend from California brought his video camera out because he airs my videos on the public access channel there in California. He was able to capture about twenty five minutes of good footage for the TV show and I uploaded that footage to my YouTube account. You can find that below in this newsletter. Haunted House, Tyler TX Some good friends of mine have gone out to a local haunted house to hold signs and pass out tracts, as a husband and wife team, for the past couple years. In years past I have always been on the road traveling somewhere else during this time but this year I was in East Texas and was able to join them. We stood right at the exit of the haunted house so we could offer tracts to everyone walking out and they could read the sign that says, “Turn to Jesus and Live.” They said that in years past there were larger crowds at this place during Halloween night. But still, there were a good amount of large groups walking out of the building that we gave gospel tracts too. Those who put on the haunted house, like the owner and the staff, also came out and spoke with us a little bit. They had seen my friends doing this for the past couple years. Surprisingly, this haunted house is on private property and yet the owner has allowed them to do this. When they first invited me I didn’t know what to think because I have a hard time preaching on public property, let alone private property! Nevertheless, the owner didn’t have any problems with us holding a Jesus sign at the exist and passing out gospel literature. Christmas Parade, Tyler Tx I had heard that there was going to be a Christmas tree lighting in the city of Tyler in the city square. This sounded like a good opportunity to evangelize. So I got in my car and drove to the downtown area, but I found that the streets were all blocked off. When I parked and walked to downtown, I found the streets were empty and the sidewalks were all lined up with people waiting for a parade! Originally I was expecting to just pass out some tracts and do a bit of preaching in the square. But now, I had an entire parade route lined with thousands of people that I could preach too! So I lifted up my banner and walked down the street preaching the message of Jesus Christ to the thousands that were waiting there. This was a rare opportunity for me to reach a group of people that I do not normally get to reach. This event had families. There were mostly parents with their children. They don’t normally get to hear preaching like this because they do not go to college or the bars and clubs where I usually preach. I was very excited for the opportunity to preach Jesus Christ to the families of Tyler Tx. Once the parade started I got out of the street. I stood on the sidewalk with my banner and held it high for everyone marching in the parade to see too. One man in particular, who was playing bagpipes, approached me. He said that he was a Firemen in the parade and saw my banner. He said that he watches open air preaching videos online and really likes it. He took my contact information and has since contacted me to get together to talk about ministry. Praise the Lord! After the parade had finished, crowds of people went to the city square to await the tree lighting. I realized that if I stood with the crowds, nobody would see the banner because everyone was looking at the tree. So I broke from the crowd and went behind the tree and behind the stage where everyone was looking. I made sure to hold my banner nice and high for all to see. It said, “Forsake All Your Sin & Follow The Lord Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ not only came to give up His life for us, but now we must give our lives to Him.

Street Preacher in Canada Falsely Accused of Hate Speech

RECENT OUTREACHES

Immediately after we closed on our first house, we hit the road for an eight week preaching tour. The last thing that we ever want is to have our house keep us off the road! We are going to keep traveling as a family preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ everywhere, just like before, except now we will have a home base to come back to. NIGHT CLUBS AT SHREVEPORT, LA

Before we left on our tour I was able to take a local brother named Chris out on the streets and a campus for some open air preaching together. In the past Chris has been the senior Pastor of two churches and now serves in the ministry as an evangelist holding revival meetings, but God has greatly burdened his heart for open air ministry.

We went together to the nightlife of Shreveport to preach to all of the club goers. This was only the second time that I had been to this spot. The first time I preached there I was alone so I was glad to have another brother come out with me. Eventually I would like to lead a large team out there regularly. The nightlife of Shreveport has no open air preachers at all except when we show up. That is a sharp contrast to a place like Sundance Square in Fort Worth that has multiple open air preaching groups that go out there every weekend. Therefore Shreveport seems like a prime location for a new evangelism team to rise up.

There are various clubs throughout this area of town which attract crowds. As the revellers were waiting in line to get into the clubs to dance and drink beer, we were bold and would raise our voices right there next to them to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As a general rule, the people waiting in line to get in were still sober. I prefer to preach to people who are not drunk.

At one point the owner of one of the busy clubs came out to talk with us. After a little while he seemed to become very frustrated and angry with us. He even threated us with violence right there in front of a Police Officer who acted like nothing happened. The owner tried to say that we were on his property but it was clearly a city sidewalk so we held our ground. As the night went on he seemed to lighten up to us. He came out many times to listen to what we were saying. By the end of the night he invited us to come back every weekend. He said that we were entertaining. Of course, we will see how he feels when we actually do return.

At certain parts of the night Christ had a pretty large crowd circled around him. He had only open air preached a few times before and this was his first time going to a location like this one. So he was doing pretty good. God was blessing his labor. It’s not like he was saying very shocking or harsh things either. He was simply preaching the Bible plainly and the sinners would circle around him in a rage. Before we knew it he had a large crowd that eventually broke up in to smaller discussion groups. There we were in the middle of the night in front of the bars and clubs and everyone was talking about the Bible and Jesus Christ!

TYLER JUNIOR COLLEGE, TX

I was also able to take Chris out to Tyler Junior College before my family and I left on our preaching tour. We went out to this campus on the very first day of classes. The campus was busier than I have ever seen it before. It was almost impossible to find a place to park. The only problem was the weather. It was an extremely hot day. Nevertheless, we were able to draw a crowd. But the crowd made sure that they were standing in the shade of the tree. When we first arrived a student went into one of the Cafeterias and announced to everyone, “Jesse’s back!” I recognized some of the students from previous years.

I preached for a while and then Chris also spoke to the students. Chris returned to the campus to preach to the students by himself after my family and I left east Texas to start our tour.

NATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL, NASHVILLE TN

Tennessee was our first stop on our tour. I had not preached in Tennessee in the past five years, since 2006. So I was happy to have another chance to call the people there to repentance and faith in Christ. As it happened, the National Folk Festival was going on there during our stay. We originally planned on being in Tennessee much sooner but circumstances prevented it. It may have been God’s providence since we were now able to preach at the National Folk Festival right there in Nashville.

The friends that invited us there lead the evangelism team at their church. This was a pretty big outreach for their church. Many of their members came out to pass out tracts, talk to people, and open air preach. I wish every church was like that! In the picture above you can even see the Pastor sharing the gospel there on the street. Pastors can be either the biggest encouragement or the biggest discouragement to a church regarding evangelism. But if the pastor of a church encourages evangelism and engages in it himself, he will see his church become alive and active in the work. Every pastor should exhort their congregation to get out there and preach the Gospel as The Great Commission is the primary objective given to us by Christ.

After we walked around and checked out the area, we found the best spot for preaching. As you can tell from the picture above, we preached right in front of the “Beer Beer Beer” tent. As it turns out, that was the busiest corner of the whole event! And the beer tent attracted exactly the type of person that we wanted to reach with the Gospel! All night long we had plenty of people to talk to and share Jesus Christ with.

There were thousands of people that attended this event. Many of them were the pot smoking hippie type. Our message was straight forward and simple. “You have broken the law of God. You need a Savior. God’s wrath is against the wicked but if you turn from your sins and trust in Jesus Christ, God will turn away from His wrath. Jesus Christ died for all of you. His death makes forgiveness available to all. But you need to repent and believe to receive it.”

The churches outreach was only for one night but I returned to the event the second night alone. I stood on the same “Beer Beer Beer” corner with a bullhorn and preached the Gospel loud and clear. One of the Police Officers gave me a hard time for using the bullhorn. He said that I was in the public park and therefore needed a permit for it. But once I took out my video camera he changed his demeanor. He then said all I needed to do was step off the curb into the street, which was blocked off, and I would be fine.

Now that it was only a matter of moving a few inches, I wasn’t going to try to argue with him. I stepped off into the street where lots of people were walking around and continued preaching. Almost immediately I started to draw a crowd. It seemed that moving off the curb into the street actually helped me! It wasn’t long before a large crowd circled around me and people started heckling and asking questions. I continued to preach with a crowd for a long time. In fact, even after the music stopped, the stage was being packed up, and all the vendors had packed up and left, I was still there preaching the gospel with a crowd of sinners standing there!

A SERMON AT A TENNESSEE CHURCH

The church was gracious enough to let me preach from the pulpit on Sunday morning. I shared my personal testimony and exhorted the church to evangelize and win souls because the wrath of God is against America. America continues on in wickedness and ungodliness and unless we as Christians get out there and win souls, America is doomed. The video for this sermon is below in the “New Videos” section.

WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY, KY

This was a brand new campus to me, but open air preaching is not new to this campus. My friends John McGlone and Kerrigan Skelly have preached there many times. Brother John came out with me to campus and warned me how wild the students can be. In fact, he said that there was a homosexual group that will protest them every time they preach. They will blast music and do all sorts of things to try to silence the preaching of the Bible. It wasn’t long after I started preaching that a crowd had gathered and I was able to preach without much interference for the first couple hours.

As I was preaching and calling sinners to repent of their sins and to obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ, there was a professing Christian girl who came out and argued, “Everybody sins. Nobodies perfect. You can’t stop sinning. That’s impossible. We all sin every day.” Based upon her own confession, I warned the crowd, “Men, watch out for this girl! She’s a sinner!” I went on to say, “Men, watch out for any women who says you can’t be perfect. She might try to seduce you.” I personally cannot trust anyone who says, “You cannot stop sinning” because there is no telling what they might do to you or to your family. They might lie, steal, or even murder you and then excuse it by saying, “Well, nobodies perfect. You can’t stop sinning.”

Anyways, the guy in the picture above was upset with me for my conversation with the girl. He got in my face and tried to intimidate me. But it wasn’t working. He was just a show off trying to impress a pretty girl. After he saw that I didn’t back down, he did.

A student walked by as I was preaching wearing this Satanic t-shirt. Interestingly enough, he was not wearing it to protest me. He looked uninterested in the crowd and the preaching all together. He simply walked by and went into the Union. This Satanic t-shirt was simply his normal attire! This just goes to show how depraved and degenerate our University campuses are and further justifies my reason for going to them.

As you can see from the picture above, we certainly created a lot of interested and got a lot of attention on the campus. Just one man with a bible can do a lot of good for Jesus Christ. Many people have told me that we reach more people for Jesus just one day out on a campus than most churches reach in an entire year. It’s sad but true.

THE EEM CONFERENCE, SHIPSHEWANNA IN

The EEM Conference is primarily a “Moral Government Theology” conference that has been going on since the 80′s. Moral Government teachers like Harry Conn used to attend during those days. I was honored to be invited to speak at this years conference along side other men like Jed Smock, Dennis Carroll, Dean Harvey, and others.

When it was my time to speak I shared how I haev found Moral Government Theology to fit hand and glove with evangelism. For example, the doctrine of free will as taught by MGT makes sinners completely responsible for their sinful state. If you tell a sinner that he wasn’t born sinful but has chosen to be sinful by his own free will, this rips away all of his excuses and makes him feel his guilt and worthiness of punishment. And if men are free moral agents, it makes perfect sense to call them to repentance and faith. And the doctrine of atonement as taught by MGT greatly helps our evangelism efforts. Since the atonement was unlimited, in that it was made for all men, I can confidently tell sinners on the street “Jesus Christ died for you” and use this truth to influence them to repentance.

All of this is contrasted with Calvinism which seems all together incompatible with evangelism. In Calvinism, men cannot repent of their sins and believe the gospel. So why call them to do so? It would be irrational to tell a man to do what you know he cannot do. If salvation is not man’s decision, why tell him to come to Jesus? And in Calvinism, Jesus didn’t die for everyone. So how could you confidently tell anyone that Jesus shed his blood for them? And unless sinners hear that Jesus died for them, how can they believe it? And they cannot be saved unless they believe. So the doctrines of Calvinism seem not only incompatible with evangelism, but actually hinder it. I know of many people who used to be zealous for soul winning until they were convinced of the Calvinist doctrine that everything is predetermined. If that is true, why be so zealous and earnest?

This years conference was “closed” in that various ministries were invited to share what they have been doing. Attendance was by invitation only. But I was very pleased to hear that next years conference will be open to the public. It is my hope that God will use conferences like this one to spread sound biblical doctrine and counteract the resurgeance of Calvinism and other false and dangerous doctrines.

ELTON JOHN CONCERT, WINDSOR CANADA

Elton John, as many people know, is a homosexual. Just recently he adapted a child. I can’t imagine the confusion and problems a child will have growing up with two homosexuals. No doubt these homosexuals start brain washing these children as soon as they have them. I personally wouldn’t trust a homosexual with a child simply because you never know what these sexual perverts will do to that child.

This concert happened just weeks after Windor had a “Gay Pride” parade. Canada seems to have completely embraced this depravity, becoming a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah. Even the city of Winnipeg is building a massive “Human Rights Muesum” that will promote homosexuality. While the liberals are no doubt thrilled at the “progression” of Canada, many of the pastors and Christians are greatly concerned and grieved.

One of the local pastors who knew this Elton John concert was coming invited me to come up to Canada to preach with him outside of it. He is new to street preaching but has a great burden for it. So the two of us went out there together with some signs and a bullhorn and preached the gospel loud and clear as people were waiting outside of the stadium to get in. The bullhorn echoed off of the building where the line was waiting so everyone could hear us easily. The location where we preached also had city buses dropping people off so we were able to reach even more people with the truth of the Bible.

A WINE FESTIVAL, CANADA

The pastor that invited me to Canada to preach outside of the Elton John concert with him also told me about a wine festival that was going on in the area. After the Elton John concert was over we drove to the festival to see if we could find a place to preach. The festival charged an admission fee to get in which my attornies have told me complicates the free speech issue even though it was in a public park. So we looked for one of the entrance/exit gates to preach from.

The first entrance/exit gate that we found was one of the side gates. It had a good amount of people so we stayed there and preached for a while. Right away we received an instant response from the people. By the time we got there everyone was already very drunk. Once they saw our banner and signs they immediately started heckling. One man started threatening me with violence and another man tried to steal my hat. I could tell it was going to be a rough night.

We decided after a little while to look for a busier gate. I knew that there must have been a larger main gate somewhere. After just a little bit of walking we found it. It had lots of people walking through it and had lots of people just hanging out outside. I thought that the other gate was rough but this one turned out to be even harder. Immediately we had hecklers from all over. The drunks swormed around us and were upset with what we were saying and doing. But we stood our ground all the same and preached the Gospel boldly, openly rebuking them for their sin and warning them of the wrath of the Lamb.

One younger man, who I don’t think was even drunk, grabbed my banner pole and tried to yank it out of my hands to run off with it. This is not the first time that this has happened to me. I continued to hold firmly unto the pole as we got into a tug of war. I looked him in the face and said, “Do you want to go to jail?” After he realized that he wasn’t strong enough to take it from me, he gave up. After it was all done, my banner pole was bent pretty badly. The same thing happened once in Missouri when a man tried to do the same thing. These poles seem to bend like butter in those situations.

Someone must have called the Police because they soon arrived. They talked with me and said that I had freedom of speech but strongly adviced that I find somewhere else to do this. After a little while, four of the Officers were basically begging me to leave just to make their job easier. They were worried that these drunks would respond violently, etc. Since we had already been at this festival for a good amount of time and since everyone seemed to be already drunk, I told the Officers that I would do them a favor and call it a night.

A SERMON AT A CANADIAN CHURCH

The pastor who invited me to Canada was gracious enough to let me preach from his pulpit on Sunday. I shared my personal salvation testimonies and shared various salvation testimonies that were the result of our ministry, to exhort and encourage the believers there to share their faith in Jesus Christ. The video from this message still needs to be uploaded to my YouTube account.

UNIVERSITY OF WINDSOR, CANADA

The University of Windsor was a new campus to me. I have never had much favor with the Police in the past when I have tried to preach on Canadian campuses, so I went on Google maps to see if this campus had a city street that I could preach from. Sure enough, there was a city street that had lots of student foot traffic during class changes that I could preach from.

I was not sure if any other campus preachers had ever tried to preach on this campus before or not. There are many campuses across the boarder in Michigan that have had campus preachers visit them before, so I wondered if any others have ventured over the river to preach on this campus or not. As it turns out, my friend Jim Gilles has tried to preach on this campus in the years past but was kicked off the campus. So it was a good thing that I started preaching from the city sidewalk.

It wasn’t long after I started preaching that the campus Police showed up. The Officer that I spoke with the most said that he was once in Seminary training to be a priest. He said that he understood what I was doing but that there had been some complaints. He said that after seeing what we were doing and talking with us that he didn’t see any problems. I was able to preach the rest of the day without any problems or hassles from the Police.

It didn’t take too long before I was surrounded by a very large crowd of students. Whenever a campus has not seen a lot of open air preachers, very bold and straight forward preaching easily gathers a crowd. The students asked about all sorts of issues. One question that many kept asking was, “What’s wrong with homosexuality?” The sad thing is, their questions were genuine. They really could not conceive of any moral problems with homosexuality. They really were wondering why Christians were against it.

I had heard of pastors in Canada getting in a lot of trouble for speaking out against homosexuality, so I used caution when the students asked me, “What do you think about homosexuality?” I said, “Well, in America I am allowed to say that it is not OK to be gay. But here in Canada, I am not allowed to say it is not ok to be gay. So I am not going to say that. But in America, I can say that it is not ok to be gay.” I thought that this was a humorous response.

I spoke to one of the police officers afterwards about this issue and he told me that it is not against Canadian law to say that homosexuality is a sin or that homosexuality is wrong. He said that it is only against Canadian law to advocate violence towards homosexuals or other groups. He said that is what qualifies as hate speech, but not merely saying that homosexuality is a sin. Nevertheless, the students still accused me of hate speech for saying that homosexuality was a sin and that homosexuals will go to hell unless they come to Jesus.

There were a variety of protestors who made their own signs. The girl above had a sign that said, “I am good without god.” I asked her, “Do you consider yourself to be a good person?” She said, “Yes.” So I took her through the Ray Comfort “Good Person Test.” After she had admitting to lying, stealing, etc, she said, “No really. I’m a great person! Do you want me to hug you?” As you can see from the picture, she walked up to me to try to give me a hug. I take the Bible verse literally that says, “It is good for man not to touch a women.” So I extended out my Bible to keep the women away from me. Plus, you never know what people will try to do to you. I’ve had women start rubbing themselves on me and I’ve had homosexuals try to kiss me. So I try to avoid all their touchiness and maintain personal space. Having a sandwich board helps that, but for some reason it seems common for women to start dirty dancing on my sandwich board. Atleast it is not on me.

It is very common on universities or on the streets for people to want to take their picture with me. Now that cameras are on cell phones this is easier than ever. I guess I am some type of oddity to them. And considering how often people tell me, “Nobody wants you here. Nobody likes you,” it is strange that their actions like taking their picture with me shows me that they want to remember me.

If somebody asks me, “Can I take my picture with you?” I will usually say, “Sure” and stop preaching for a second for the picture. To make it more of a dramatic picture I will find the camera and point directly at it. This makes for a good photo. I will then encourage them to “tag” me on facebook. My strategy in all this is simple. I figure that if they take a good picture, they will want to show their friends. And if they upload it to their facebook, then all their friends can see it and talk about it. Usually the message on a banner, sign, or t-shirt is also included in the picture. So when they share the picture with others who were not there, they will get the message as well. We can have a much larger reach and influence nowadays because of the digital technology that existence than what was possible in previous years.

This particular girl, atleast I think it was a girl, held a sign next to me for a while that said, “I Love Sex.” This shows that sad state of affairs for our university campuses today. Here we were talking about issues of eternal significance, debating very important and relevant topics, and the only thing that this student could contribute was, “I Love Sex.” This just further shows how important it is for campus preachers like myself to go to these campuses. We are trying to lift their minds out of the gutter and put their attention and things that really matter, like the salvation of their souls. These students need to realize that their most valuable possession is certainly not their genitals, but their souls. As the Bible says, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and loses his own soul?”

It is very sad to think that the greatest experience many of these students have ever had has been sex – a merely physical experience, when the greatest experience a person can ever have is the salvation of their soul. To be born again and to have a relationship with Jesus Christ is the greatest experience that human beings can ever have, but many of these students know nothing about it. Their greatest experience in life is no greater than that which a dog or a beast of the woods can have.

One of my favorite characteristics of the location where we preached from was the staircase. I have preached in many locations over the past decade, but my favorite place to preach is either an ampitheatre or in front of a staircase. This is because it provides a place where the students can sit down. Sitting seems to have a natural calming effect upon the crowd. Sometimes the crowds can get out of hand in the open air. I have had many crowds circle in around me very closely. But when there is a wall or a staircase where the students can sit, this both keeps the crowds back and helps to keep them calm. And students always seem a bit more attentive when the preaching enviroment is like this one, atleast in my opinion.

While the first day on campus seemed to go very well, it was the second day that I received problems from the police. I had been preaching for maybe twenty minutes when the police arrived. They said that they had received a “hate speech” complaint from one of the students. They said that they believed the complaint to be false and said that the investigation would likely prove it to be so, but that their higher ups told them to shut me down for the day.

The hate speech law of Canadan states that you cannot promote genocide against any people group, including homosexuals. And the police said that they didn’t believe that I was promoting genocide. I told them that I am trying to help homosexuals, not hurt them. I want to see them saved.

They said that I had two options. I could either stay and keep preaching, but they would immediately arrest me and then investigate the hate speech complaint. Or I could leave for the day and the whole thing comes to naught.

I said, “Don’t you arrest someone after an investigation?” They said, “Not in this case.” So apparently you are guilty until proven innocent. They said that an investigation would be a lot of work for them to do which would be a burden, especially because they believed that the complaint was unfounded. They said that they heard me the day before and didn’t have problems with what I was saying. Nevertheless, they had an official complaint and would have to act on it if I didn’t leave immediately. This would have created more complications for me as well since I was planning on crossing the boarder back to the US soon and certainly wouldn’t want to have to come back to Windsor for any court appearances. Therefore, I left.

One student followed us who said he was a Christian. We talked to him for some time and he seemed encouraged in the Lord. Another student also followed us who was an atheist. We talked to him for some time as well. He said that he was a student at a different college but heard from a friend what we did yesturday and so he came out to check it out. He sent me an email with some questions as well and also became my friend on facebook. There were numerous students from this campus who joined my facebook so even though I am not on their campus I can still have an impact in their lives for Jesus Christ!

A SERMON AT A DETROIT MICHIGAN CHURCH

My pastor friend in Canada connected me with a pastor friend of his in Detroit. He opened up some doors for me to minister to the believers in Detroit. First he invited me on his radio broadcast program where I was able to share what the Lord has been speaking to me. And then he let me speak to his church.

I preached a sermon called “The John The Baptist Movement.” I explained how John the Baptist was sent by God to be a voice to prepare the first coming of the Lord. Then I explained how Jesus gave the Great Commission to the Christian church to prepare the world for the second coming of Christ. Just as John the Baptist publicly rebuked and confronted sin and pointed sinners to the Savior Jesus Christ, so must the Church of Jesus Christ in these last days. The sermon was video recorded and will be uploaded to my YouTube account soon.

WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY, DETROIT MI

Right across the boarder from Windsor Canada is Detroit Michigan with Wayne State University. I know of multiple campus preachers that have preached on this campus in the past but it was new to me. It seemed pretty clear to me after I started preaching that it was going to be a wild crowd. The students were in an uproar when I started speaking against things like gangster rap music and Islam. The crowd became very large and very angry very quickly. But I was able to say a few humorous things which seemed to lighten up the atmosphere and attitude of the crowd. There are certain crowd control techniques which are good for campus preachers to know.

I spoke to somebody who said that the campus was wide open regarding free speech but after I preached for about an hour, the Police and administration showed up. They said that there was a designated free speech area somewhere else or outside groups and said that prior notice was required. When I first arrived on campus I noticed how the city streets that surrounded the campus also had alot of students walking on them so I decided to simply move to the city sidewalk instead of going through the hassle the administration would have given me. I announced to the crowd where I was going and many of them followed me there.

I moved to the city sidewalk and continued preaching and many of the students followed me there, including two undercover police officers. The stayed the whole time and made sure the crowd did not get out of hand. The student with the “Hail Satan” t-shirt was not wearing that shirt to protest what I was doing. I wasn’t even on the campus a few minutes before he walked by already wearing it. That was his normal attire! Certainly Satan is having an impact and influence on these campuses so it is ver important that Jesus does as well! And Jesus does that through His people!

WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY

Some friends in Michigan hosted us while we were there. They originally found our ministry by searching the internet for Charles Finney. They said that many of the websites they found were anti-Finney but were very happy to find our ministr because we were modern day preachers that were declaring the same truths that Finney taught during the revivals of his day. They are a large Christian family and had two teenagers who came out to campus with me. Their family was already very familar with our YouTube videos but were excited to see it first hand.

The closest campus to our host home was Western Michigan University. I didn’t know any campus preachers who had been on this campus so I wasn’t sure what the “free speech policies” were. I assumed that like many other campuses in Michigan, it was a wide open campus.

We arrived on campus during the class change so I found the closest bench that I saw, jumped up unto it, and started preaching. You coud tell by the looks and expressions on the students faces that they had never seen anybody like me before. Many of them looked shocked and stunned. Conservative Christianity seems to be rarer and rarer the further North that you go.

This was a student who heckled me for a while. Some students referred to it as a male and others as a female. At first I was a little confused myself but more and more it became obvious that this was a boy wearing a bra. I suspected that maybe it was taking hermones as well. The students had no expressions of shock or disgust for this creep. But they had plenty of expressions of shock and disgust for me for preaching the Bible! That’s sad. You can be a cross dressing, hermone popping, weirdo and the university students will be more than accepting and tolerant of our behavior, but if you are a sandwich board wearing, Bible preaching, Christian and the university students will be very aggressive in their opposition and hostility toward you and your message. Boys can walk around campus wearing bras and that’s completely fine, but if Christians put a biblical message on a sandwich board and walk around campus the are going too far!

There was the typical heckling and mocking but overall this campus was pretty tame. Nobody went crazy or got out of hand. There was no violence or even any threat of violence. For the most part the students just gathered around, asked questions, made comments, etc. Socialism seemed to be a popular topic for discussion. The students kept asking about why that was on my sign. They laughed when I said, “The Bible says, ‘Thou Shalt Not Be A Socialist” They would say, “No it doesn’t! Where does it say that?” I would open up my Bible and take them to Exodus chapter twenty and read, “Thou Shalt Not Steal.” I would explain how socialism is synonomous with stealing. Socialists want to redistribute the wealth. That’s the precise goal of a bank robber too! Bank robbers and socialists both want to take money from those who earned it and worked for it and put it in the pockets of those who didn’t earn it by their own labor. It is unfortunate that Christians need to educate American university students about the evils of socialism, especially when they are paying so much money to a university for an education that isn’t doing it.

Even in the rain the students stayed and listened. It is not hard to draw a crowd and maintain a crowd so long as your preaching is personal and direct. If you are preaching about issues that are relevent to their lives and are confronting the wickedness that they are engaging it, you will capture their attention and keep their attention even in the rain.

After preachig for about three hours, somebody called the police. There was a homosexual group that came out and heckled me and the police arrived shortly after they left. I suspect that they might have called the police. From my experiences in the past, homosexuals are the most intolerant of Christians more than any other groups. Even the atheists will try to debate you, but the homosexuals will always try to get you to leave campus.

The Police said that a permit was required to speak on campus. Since I had already preached for about three hours I wasn’t going to try to argue it. The Constitution of the United States should be the only “free speech permit” that any American ever needs to speak on public property. And I question weather such a permit policy even exists for the campus. Nevertheless we ended up having a great outreach on this campus and I hope to return some day.

MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

Michigan State University has had a lot of campus preachers in the past. In fact, I know of one man who will go to this campus every week to preach. And my friend and fellow campus preacher Brother Jed Smock had visited this campus only a week before I came. I know that the more students encounter open air preaching, the harder it is to capture their attention. Nevertheless, with the help of a sign and a sandwich board, I was able to draw a very good size crowd and preach all day.

I had not been preaching very long when this man with a pink hat and a “Recycle Yourself” t-shirt came over and began telling some kind of story. He stood across from where I was standing and stole a good part of my crowd for a little while. I couldn’t hear what he was saying but one of the people with my group went over to see what it was and she said it didn’t make any sense to her. Though he was successful in capturing the attention of my crowd for a little while, it didn’t last. I continued to preach the Gospel hot and strong and eventually the crowd came back over. Many times in the past seven years that I have been preaching on campuses have various people or groups stolen my crowd. But in reality, they don’t really stand a chance. I am accustomed to preaching for four to six hours at a time. I have yet to meet a heckler or a competitive speaker that I couldn’t outlast. I think that they usually run out of things to say. And the crowd will eventually lose interest with them and come back over to where I am preaching.

Atheism seemed to be a strong hold on this particular campus. Many of the students were walking around with “The god delusion” by Richard Dawkins. I wondered if it was required reading for one of their classes. There was even one student from the middle east that I met who used to be muslim but now was an atheist who was promoting Richard Dawkins book. Since this was such a big issue on this campus, I gave some Christian apologetics for the existence of God and attacked atheism as a worldview. But many of the students seemed indifferent and unaffected by the reason and logic I presented them with. Ultimately atheism isn’t a mental problem but a moral dilemma. At the end of the day it really comes down to the fact that people do not want God to rule their lives.

You can see the intelligence and maturity level of these students by the types of signs that they made. I came down to their maturity level and made the crowd laugh by saying, “My sign is better than your sign” and also, “I’ve seen homeless people with better signs than those.” Though I am often very serious and stern when preaching the Gospel, I also see the benefits of having and showing a sense of humor.

Another example is how I responded to the issue of evolution. The atheists, of course, brought up the issue of evolution and asked what my thoughts were on it. I explained the difference between macro evolution and micro evolution, pointed out the irreducible complexity that exists within creation, showed evolutions inconsistency with the established scientific law of cause and effect, and illustrated how evolution doesn’t even quality as a scientific theory because it is not observable, testable, or reproducable. I also pointed out that the origin of specifies itself is beyond the natural limitations of science because of its empirical epistemology. But I could tell that these students weren’t really interested in my answers. Often the person asking the question will start talking to somebody else immediately after asking the question! They are not genuine questions but are simply meant to trip up the preacher. So when somebody else asked, “What about Charles Darwin?” Rather than getting into the apologetic answers that it seems they don’t even listen to or care about, I simply said, “Charles Darwin had the mind of a monkey! By his own confession!” This was something that the students listened to and will likely remember, and something which they didn’t even try to refute!

No matter what questions were being asked or what topics were being brought up, I made sure to always bring the discussion back to Jesus Christ. I said things like, “You know how I know that Jesus is alive? Because I know Him! I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ! I know that Jesus rose from the dead and is alive and well today because when nobody else could reach me and change me, Jesus did. I was by far the worst kid in school growing up. My parents couldn’t help me. My friends couldn’t help me. My teachers couldn’t help me. Nobody could change me until I met Jesus Christ! Jesus is alive and He is still changing lives!”

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

This was another campus that my friend Jed Smock had visited just a week before my visit. It was also one of the many campuses on our tour that was new to me. I was a little worried that since Brother Jed had been on this campus the week before that I would have a hard time drawing a crowd. It took me a little while to figure out the best place to start preaching but eventually I decided that preaching in front of the staircase would be best. Though there was not many people walking up and down the staircase but everyone was walking in the open square, I knew that if I started preaching that people would start to sit on the stairs to listen.

Once I started preaching, a man with a “free candy” sign stood near me and started giving out free candy. Then a few other people stopped and started heckling me. Before long I had a good size crowd that grew and stayed the whole day.

As you can see, my two year old daughter wanted to come and see me and help hold my sign. It seems that whenever she sees me holding a sign in public, she wants to hold it too. Her presence won the affection of the crowd. And the staircase did provide a great place for the students to sit down during the preaching, just as I had predicted.

Throughout the day the crowd changed in size a few times. Sometimes it got smaller and sometimes it grew larger, but it maintainced a good size the entire time. An issue that kept being brought up on these campuses is that of the Gnostic gospels. The students would say things like, “What about the other gospels that didn’t make it in the bible? The Bible is incomplete.” And then later on the students would say something like, “The gospels were written too late. They couldn’t have been written by their supposed authors.”

I found these statements from the students to be both ignorant, misinformed, and inconsistent. The reason that the Gnostic gospels were rejected was because they could not have been written by their supposed authors. They were written too late. Some of them were written in a language or style that their supposed author wouldn’t have even known. They were counterfiets. Yet these students are not satisfied because these Gnostic gospels were not put into the Bible. And at the same time, they try to say that the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were counterfiet and were written too late. They had it backwards. the Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were in the Bible because the early Christians knew who the authors were and their credibilities. The gospels in the Bible are there for good reasons and the gospels that were rejected were rejected for good reasons. But the students will try to turn both of these issues into reasons for rejecting Christianity. It just goes to show what Charles Finney said, “God cannot please sinners.”

While it might look like he put this outfit on to heckler us, that is not the case. In the past there have been students who have heckled us who have worn halloween outfits, but while we were still driving around looking for a place to park I saw this man on the street corner wearing this mask and playing his violin. It is not that he was wearing it to somehow mock us. He was just a strange person.

When he first started playing I thought to myself, “Great. This guy is going to drown out the preaching and I am going to end up losing my voice.” So I decided to stop preaching while he was playing his song, hoping that he would just play a song and leave. But he kept playing numerous songs. He had talent and the crowd liked him at first but I suspected that they would eventually lose interest in him. Sure enough, after a couple songs the students tried to talk with me again. I told them that I couldn’t talk while the guy was playing. So they started waiting for him to finish. A little while later I asked the crowd, “Does anyone have any questions?” A student answered and said, “Yea I have one.” I said to him, “Sorry. I can’t answer your question. This guy is still playing.” I was hoping that the crowd would turn on him. So the students asked him to stop playing so that they could ask me a question. He stopped for a little while but then picked it up again. I kept preaching and the crowd was no longer paying attention to him. So he eventually left and went somewhere else to try to get attention.

This was a muslim girl who came out and stood next to me in front of the crowd with a sign that said something like, “Can’t we all be friends?” I told her that I have no problem being nice and kind to her, but that she was an enemy of God because of her sins. As time when on she became very foul mouthed. She was using all sorts of filthy language and started calling me all sorts of foul names. She wasn’t very friendly towards me.

I asked her, “Do you think that muslims and Christians worship the same God?” She said, “Yes, we do worship the same God.” I said, “Great! I didn’t know that Muslims worshipped my God! I worship the Trinity. I worship Jesus Christ. Is Jesus Christ your God?” She said, “No, Jesus Christ is not my God.” I said, “Wait a minute. You said that we worshipped the same God! Did you lie to me?” It seems to be a very common view on universities today that all religions worship the same God. But this just shows a person’s ignorance in actually studying what various religions teach and believe about God. When all the cards are laid on the table, it is very clear that all religions do not worship the same God. Satanism is a religion. And Satanists do not worship the same God as Christians… though they might worship the same God as the muslims!

UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG, CANADA

The University of Winnipeg is one of those campuses which I believe has never had an open air preacher. Right next to this campus is the “William and Catherine Booth College” and also the “Menno Simmons College.” William and Catherine Booth and also Menno Simmons were open air preachers. Yet I do not believe that the University of Winnipeg has ever had an open air preacher on it.

Since I have never had much favor trying to preach on a Canadian campus, I started preaching from the city sidewalk. I stood right near a busy crosswalk that many of the students use which was also right near the open grassy area that many of the students hang out in. The weather was exceptional for this part of the year in Winnipeg so many of the students were taking advantage of it by hanging out on the grass.

It didn’t take very long before the students started heckling and gathering around. This was a rare spectacle for them. Issues like creationism, evolution, lesbianism, pot smoking, alcohol, gangster rap, dirty dancing, premartial sex, etc, were all talked about in relation to God and the Bible. The crowd seemed to grow larger and larger.

A student who claimed to be an atheist asked me, “Why are you here?” I said, “Well, have you ever prayed as an atheist, ‘God if you are real, give me a sign?” He said, “Sure.” I said, “Well, here it is. This is your sign! God is real and He wants you to repent of your sins and believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ!”

The Police soon arrived and said that they had received some complaints from the campus security. They acknowledged that I had a right to free speech and that I was on the city sidewalk, but was worried about the size of the crowd. I told them that if it was a problem, tell the crowd to leave. They said, “We can’t do that. They have a right to stop.” I thought to myself, “Then what’s the problem?” I could tell that the Police were getting close to making me leave (unlawfully) so I decided to negotiate with them. I told them that I would put my banner away which would attract less attention. They said that if I put the banner away, I could keep preaching. So that is what I did, for a few more hours.

After preaching a few more hours, some young muslims joined the crowd and one of them started spitting on my banner that was on the ground and making threats. Another man started smoking a joint and even put it in my pocket. The campus security apparently called the Police because they soon arrived. This time they really wanted to shut down the entire situation. I told them that since I had preached for so many hours already that I would just call it a day and come back tomorrow.

When I returned the next day, the campus security was not pleased to see me. They thought that the Police made me put my banner away and then made me leave the campus the day before. I tried to explain that I did both of those things voluntarily and that the Police never made me do any of that, but they didn’t believe me. They said, “Well, if you get another big crowd today we’ll have to call the Police again.”

I started preaching and almost immediately had a crowd of students. The size of the crowd grew larger and larger. The campus security had apparently hired some extra help because there were more security officers out there this time. The Police arrived after about an hour or so when the crowd was an estimated 250 people.

The Police told me that they were concerned about my saftey because downtown Winnipeg was a dangerous place, because I was offending people, and because the crowd was so big. I told them that I understand the risks involved in my job just like there are risks involved in their job, but that it was a risk I was willing to take. I also said that there had been no violence and that I honestly was not expecting there to be any and that it was mere conjecture on their part. But they said that if I did not leave campus they would arrest me for disturbing the peace. In all of the legal cases I have been involved in, the application of “disturbing the peace” to free speech activity is never held up in court. But Canada is too far for me to travel to try to challenge this. If I lived in or near Winnipeg it would be different. So I decided to leave the campus, or actually, leave the city street.

I was preaching the Bible today on Portage Ave in front of the University of Winnipeg. I had a crowd of about 40 students gathered around asking me questions. The Police arrived and said that because some people in the crowd were angry at what I was saying, that I could no longer exercise free speech on Portage Ave for today. And they said if I come back I would be arrested for “disturbing the peace”.

I wanted to request information regarding free speech laws. Do I have freedom of speech on Portage Ave? Is my speech protected even if people don’t like it or get angry at it? Does a crowd have veto power over a speakers freedom of speech?

Some people in the crowd didn’t like what I was saying and some of them were angry at my message, but nobody was aggressive and there was no violence neither any threat of violence.

But what you are telling me is that an angry listener has veto power over a speakers freedom of speech? And that rather than the Police control the crowd, they should threaten the preacher with arrest?

If a crowd gets disorderly, the Police should control the crowd because they are breaking the law. But a speaker should not be threatened with arrest if the only thing he is doing is speaking, no matter what the reaction is of the listeners. If somebody threatens a preacher with violence, arrest the threat rather than strip the preacher of freedom of speech.

If speach is not protected when other people do not like what is being said, then speach is not protected at all. Free speech only exists if you have the right to say it despite the disagreements of others.

But you are telling me that I have freedom of speech so long as everyone likes what is being said, so long as nobody is upset with the message.

I decided not to file any official complaint because I am not convinced that it would do any good. But it should be part of a Police officers training that if a crowd becomes angry with a person exercising their freedom of speech, it is the duty of the Police to control or arrest the people in the crowd causing the disturbance rather than to usurp the rights of the speaker or to arrest the one who is merely using his rights. And you definitely shouldn’t take away free speech based upon a conjecture that people might respond with violence. That would be like the government outlawing mini-skirts because someone might respond by raping them. Liberals wouldn’t dream of doing that! But they will take away a Christians freedom of speech because someone might become aggressive towards them.

Police Shut Down Free Speech Outside Eldorado Casino

RECENT OUTREACHES

During the school year we focus our ministry on university and college campuses. During the summer, however, we focus more on street and event preaching since the campuses have slowed down.

TYLER, TX

While this crowd was not a very large crowd, it was very unique. This was an event put on in the public square for the dignitaries, elected officials, business owners, executives, etc, of the community who had donated to a particular group. Even the major of the town came out to give a little speech.

It was a good opportunity for me to be able to speak to a crowd that I normally do not get to speak to. Most of our ministry reaches college students and party-goers, but this was a chance to reach a different type of person with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I held my generic sign that says, “Trust Jesus. He shed His blood for you.” As a firm believer in the unlimited atonement of Jesus Christ, I have the blessing of being able to tell every sinner that I met on the street that Jesus Christ died for them and that they have an opportunity of being saved if they will just repent of their sins and believe the gospel.

My daughter insisted on holding and carrying my sign after she saw me preaching with it! It is very important for parents to set a good example for their children because they so eagerly imitate them!

DALLAS, TX

In downtown Dallas there is a busy spot called “The West End.” It has a train station, a bus depot, restaurants, etc. I first preached there in 2004. It seems to be much busier now than it was then.

I found a good street corner to preach on that had lots of foot traffic. I decided to stay near the city street because the police have bothered me before in years past for being on “Dart property,” which is the company that does the transportation. However, I ran into some other street preachers down there who said they have been preaching down there for a little while without any problems from the police.

I stood on a chair wearing a sandwich board and preached the gospel loud enough for all to hear. I had various people come up and talk to me throughout the day. One man that I spoke with was visiting the United States from Columbia! That’s one of the great things about street preaching; you never know who you are going to reach! There was another young man who came and spoke with me who claimed to be a Satanist. Even the man riding on a big street cleaner stopped a few times to talk with me!

One young man approached me and asked me what this was all about. I explained to him the message and he told me that he was a believer who just recently converted to Christianity and started reading the Bible. He said that he has seen various street preachers down here before but that my sign really grabbed his attention and interest. I encouraged him in the Lord and then he went on his way.

FORT WORTH, TX

I was in Fort Worth for two nights to preach the gospel. Sundance Square still has a very popular nightlife. The nightlife is diverse because it is not merely a club district. There are also concerts, a comedy house, restaurants, etc. Young and old people venture out to the streets in this area for various reasons to enjoy the nightlife. This creates a great atmosphere for preaching because you can reach a diverse crowd.

Although I went out on this outreach by myself, I ran into some street preachers that I knew from years past. There were also some street preachers out in Sundance Square that I had never met. It appears that this has become a very popular location, not only for sinners but also for Christians. In fact, the street corner that I was preaching on apparently is normally occupied by another street preaching group. There are so many street preachers that there are not enough good street corners! That’s not necessarily a bad thing!

SHREVEPORT, LA

My family and I are purchasing our first home in the Tyler, Tx area. We have lived in this area on and off over the years and have always enjoyed East Texas. About an hour and a half west from Tyler is the Dallas area. That is where I’ve always gone for Friday and Saturday night outreaches. But an hour and a half east of Tyler is the city of Shreveport. Throughout all the years that I have been in this area, I had never made my way into Shreveport to check it out for street preaching spots. Through a simple search on the internet I was able to locate some casinos, bars, and clubs which looked promising as far as outreaches were concerned.

During the day I preached across the street from a casino called “Eldorado.” There was one particular cross walk that seemed to get a lot of foot traffic as people parked in the parking garage and had to cross the street there to go to the casino. I held my “God Hates Sin” banner and said things like, “You can’t spell casino without spelling the word sin.”

After about twenty five minutes of preaching on my bullhorn, a female security guard approached me and said I was on private property and needed to leave. She was very upset. I told her that I was on the city sidewalk but she insisted I was on private property. When I asked her where the private property ended, she told me to move back about five feet. I did that and she left me alone.

Five minutes later another man approached me who was also with the casino security. He also said that I was on private property and needed to leave. And he too was very angry. I insisted that I was on a city sidewalk and therefore didn’t have to leave and requested that he call the Police.

When the Police finally arrived, Officer Stafford agreed with the security that I was on their private property! He asked the man if he wanted to press charges! I said that I had no problem leaving if I was on private property, but that I wanted to know where the public property started. Officer Stafford arbitrarily pointed me to two blocks down. There were many other businesses, besides the casino, in between where I was and where he pointed me too. So I asked for his supervisor.

When his supervisor arrived, he said that I could be arrested for disturbing the peace because I was preaching outside of their business. He said that I needed to leave or be arrested. I asked him where I needed to go and he said that I needed to move one block down. That was one block closer than what Officer Stafford said. In fact, that was a location which Officer Stafford said was private property! I decided that since I wasn’t going to get anywhere with them, I’ll just move down a block.

I moved to where they said I could preach and was able to do so without any further disturbance from the Police. I did manage to get this entire situation filmed on video so all the evidence of their constitutional violations are recorded for legal purposes. I contacted the city engineer and the city traffic engineer to ask them if the sidewalks across the street from the casino were public or private. They both affirmed that the sidewalks were public! I have given my attorneys all the information that they need to file a lawsuit against the Shreveport Police Department and Eldorado Casino.

The nightlife of Shreveport was pretty active. It didn’t really pick up until about 11:00pm. The sidewalks were busy with people walking to and from various bars and clubs. Most of the party places are all in one particular neighborhood. For most of the night I stood up and preached on a wall with my banner. Many people wanted their picture taken with me and the sign. It was obvious that this city hasn’t seen a lot of street preaching like this. I also was able to stand right in front of a line of sinners waiting to get into a bar and preach the gospel. At one point there were five police officers on that same corner, but they acted like I wasn’t even there! That’s what I like! It looks like I won’t have any problems from the police in the future going back to the Shreveport nightlife to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ!

A PERSONAL REQUEST FROM JESSE

Dear Friends,

I wanted to write a personal support letter to my friends and supporters to raise up the necessary funds for me to go to Connecticut to meet some of my immediately family, for the first time.

Since I was 3 years old I have not seen my father. For the past 25 years I have wanted to get in touch with him but he has been very hard to find. He has alcohol problems and is often homeless.

My father, sister, and two brothers, are all in Connecticut but I am living in Texas. So I want to make a trip up to Connecticut to meet them, get to know them, and to be a Christian witness in their lives.

While I am there I will also preach on the streets and campuses. Particularly, I plan on preaching at the University of Connecticut, Central Connecticut State University, and Yale University. So it would be a mission trip in many ways.
