Newsletter Archive: You Can Keep Sinning! 12/07/2005

For many years, the newsletters for Open Air Outreach were only published through email. Those newsletters were not posted online. We are now in the process of archiving these old newsletters online so that they are available to the body of Christ at large to read and be encouraged and edified by them.

The contents from this post was an email newsletter sent out on 12/07/2005

Handling HecklersQuestion: How could God send His own children to hell?

Answer: God does not send His own children to hell. Rather, the children of the devil go to be with their father when they die, and the children of God go to be with their Father.

The assumption that everyone is a child of God is false. Though all are part of the creation of God, not all are children of God. Some are “children of the devil”. Jesus said to religious hypocrites that they were just like their “father the devil”. Paul said to a sorcerer “you son of the devil”.

The popular and modern belief that everyone is God’s child flies in the face of the gospel itself. The gospel is that “through faith in Jesus Christ” we have been granted “the right to become children of God”; that if we are led by the Spirit of God then we are sons of God; that we have “received the Spirit of adoption” to the family of God. But until someone is “born again” into God’s family, they are in the family of the devil.

There is a way to tell whose child you are. The bible tells us that the answer is manifest by what we do; if we do not practice righteousness we are not righteous, if we do not love we are not Christians. If we sin, meaning continue in sin, we are of the devil, and we know that “the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience.”

The greatest opportunity God has given fallen man is to be reconciled back to Him through Jesus Christ. We all have the opportunity to become children of God if we turn away from our sin, and turn to Jesus Christ.

Scriptures 1John 3:10, John 8:44, Galatians 3:26, John 1:12, Romans 8:15, John 3:3, 1 John 3:10, 1 John 3:8, Ephesians 5:6, Colossians 3:6

Handling HecklersQuestion: You can’t repent! You can’t stop sinning!

Answer: There are some children (and adults) that will say they can’t live without their video games. Cigarette smokers will say they can’t live without their cigarettes. When you love and cherish something, you can’t imagine living without it. And often sinners will say that they can’t live without their sin; that they can’t repent. And the reason is because they love their sin.

I always ask them to be specific, to tell me exactly which sin it is that they can’t repent from; just which sin is it that you can’t stop doing. The real problem is not that they can’t stop but that they won’t stop. The drunkard does not will to put down the bottle. The fornicator does not will to live pure. But Christ said, “Unless you repent…you will perish”

We are told that God does not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear, and that God always provides a way out. What we need to do is always take the way out. If we love God we will keep His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome. We even have the ability to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, and be more then a conqueror if we allow Christ to strengthen us.

Some say, “Do I really have to give up all my sin?” And of course the answer is no, you can keep sinning if you want. You don’t have to give up ALL your sin. You don’t have to give up getting drunk. You don’t have to give up fornication. You don’t have to give up blasphemy. You don’t have to give up all your sin. And you don’t have to go to heaven either. You can go to hell if you want. You can abide under God’s wrath if you want. Or you can repent and be reconciled back to God.

To the heart that loves God and hates sin, it brings much peace and comfort to know that you can obey God and that you don’t have to sin against Him! Just as possible as it is for us to sin, it is just as possible for us not to sin. So stop loving the sin that hates you, cast away your sin before your sin has you cast away!

Texas Tour Stories

For a short time I had the honor of traveling with a band of preachers from campus to campus throughout Texas. We had wonderful fellowship and powerful meetings on campus. It was really great while it lasted.

Oklahoma University:

Oklahoma University has had quite a bit of preachers. So it’s hard to get the attention of the students by preaching. But we stood in a new spot where they are not used to having preachers and that through people off. It sparked their curiosity enough for them to stop and listen.

Amazingly we were even well received by some of the Christians on campus, who called up their friends on their cell phones telling them to come and listen to the preaching!

We were able to preach for hours answering all the questions the students had about God, the bible, and Christianity. Afterwards I spoke one2one with a girl who seemed as though she was ripe for the harvest. It was obvious others had already toiled the ground and planted some seeds. I helped water the seed by encouraging her to get into the bible herself, to see if what we said was true. And she said she would do that.

Texas Tech Lubbock:

This campus actually had areas on it’s campus with plaques saying “Forum Area”. Usually groups will use these areas to set up tables, but not for speaking. Our preaching seemed to be quite a shock to the students who never see anyone on their campus preaching!

The largest crowds I had ever preached to yet were on this campus. There was division between the crowds. Some people said what we were doing was awesome, while others said it was awful. But the Word of God was boldly proclaimed!

I spoke to one student who had been listening to us preaching, and felt heavy conviction. He said he used to walk with God but since he has been in college has fallen. After talking with him in depth he seemed very genuine and sincere about getting right with God. He was still battling back and forth between obeying God and living for himself, but after talking with him more he seemed determined to get back into relationship with God by repenting!

Amazingly we were even covered by the local Fox News two days in a row, as well as being covered by the campus paper. There is a link to the paper in this newsletter, and the footage of Fox News will be added to the site soon.

University of North Texas, Denton:

This campus had a great preacher, Tom Short, speaking on it right before we spoke. Tom did a wonderful job open air preaching, and I was able to watch and learn from him for a day.

So the campus became used to the open air preaching. Once we started we had the typical loud mouth wild and often loony hecklers, but eventually all the heckling stopped and we were able to talk to genuine and sincere inquirers who sat in the grass and asked questions. It was wonderful!

Southern Methodist University:

After attempting to preach on this private campus, I was shut down by the administration. But after speaking with the administration, they decided to sponsor OpenAirOutreach to use their free speech area the following day! They said they had not had someone request to speak in their free speech area for about two and a half years!

We had quite the crowds on this campus. Though a supposed Christian campus, it seemed only 1 out of a 100 were living for God; the rest were getting drunk, sleeping around, living as homosexuals, etc. Very sad indeed. John Wesley would turn over in his grave.

But we hammered against sin and preached the uncompromisingly strong message of the gospel! A student of SMU, Krysta, came up to use afterwards and told us she loved what we did, and that it needed to be done. She also said that she is going to start open-air preaching on her campus about one a month, as the administration allows her times to do it! Although we can’t be on the campus all the time, praise God that He has raised up another laborer who can.

Texas A&M:

We had many open-air preaching meetings on this campus in the two days that we were there, with fairly large crowds. One of the most powerful moments was when Miles Lewis was preaching out of a compassionate heart, and after sharing both Law and grace he asked the crowd, “When will you repent?” Three men responded back with, “right now.” Miles got down and prayed with the three of them that they would be reconciled back to God through Jesus Christ!

University of Texas, Austin:

We were actually sponsored by the Christian Athletes group on campus. But after our first open-air meeting we ended up being kicked off campus. The crowds are very large, but they were also very angry. One kid even stole our sound equipment and ended up smashing it on the ground. Unfortunately the administration threatened to take away the Athletes groups organization status on campus if they sponsored us again and another situation occurs.

But we were able to preach on the sidewalks around campus. We were still able to pull together very nice crowds and have great meetings.

Some Christians who had seen the meeting we had on campus said, “That was awesome!” while others said, “I’m still trying to process everything that happened” while of course there were some who said, “it was awful”.

One of the highlights of the trip to Austin I would say is when one of the guys on the team got to give a tract to the Major of Austin, as well as give him a few words of witness. Pray that the Major be converted if he is not already, and that he will start basing his political beliefs entirely on the bible!
