Evangelism Seminar, Philadelphia PA
I was blessed with an opportunity to put on an Evangelism Seminar for a church in Philadelphia. This was the second time the church had me come and speak. I preached multiple sermons on Saturday and on Sunday, but one of my main messages was:
What’s Wrong with the Modern Gospel?
I will upload that sermon to my YouTube when I get a chance. I listed out numerous problems found in the modern gospel that is preached, but one of the primary problems is a message that is void of repentance! Some false teachers even go as far as to explicitly preach, “You don’t have to repent of your sins to be saved!”
There are certain preachers, known as Antinomians, who preach that “repentance” is “works” and therefore “You don’t have to repent of your sins to be saved.” And “Repent of your sins is heresy.”
This is gross error! The Bible makes a distinction between repentance and works:
Act 26:20 – But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should REPENT and turn to God, and do WORKS meet for repentance.
Works follow repentance but repentance is not a work. Repentance is a change of mind – in relation to sin repentance is a change of mind about sinning.
A change of mind about your actions always results in a change of works, which is why the Bible says:
Jon 3:10 – And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
Antinomians misunderstands Jonah 3:10 and falsely categories repentance as works and then concludes you don’t have to repent of your sins to be saved.
This is DAMNABLE HERESY.
They say all you have to do is repent of unbelief to be saved, not any other sins in your life. But unbelief is a sin. So even Antinomians say you must repent of sin to be saved! The sin of unbelief!
The Bible does say you must repent of your sins as a precondition to forgiveness:
Acts 8:22 – Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee
Acts 2:38 – Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
And as we already saw, Paul who was the Apostle to the Gentiles was told to preach to the Gentiles repent, turn to God, and do works meet for repentance (Acts 26:20).
Galatians 1:8 – But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach anyother gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia PA
This was only my second time ever preaching to this campus. It is not the easiest campus to draw a crowd at and in the past the administration has worked very hard to try to shut us down. In the past they even sent out their landscaping team with their blowers and mowers to follow us wherever we went! Universities today want to brainwash their students with liberalism, isolating them from any conservative voice or conservative values.
One of the points I pressed on this campus was that, “Hell is a public expression of God’s hatred for sin.” If you want to know God’s estimation of how evil sin really is, look at the severity to which he punishes it. Those who do not believe that sin deserves eternal hell simply have a disagreement with the mind of God over the demerit of sin. But when you really see sin for what it is, you see that you deserve hell for it. And in light of that, we see our need of Salvation through the mercy of God in Jesus Christ.
One atheist walked by and heckled, “God isn’t real! God is a fairytale!” I told him, “The signature of God is in every cell of your body – The genetic code in your DNA! The only known cause for intelligent information is an intelligent mind!” Rather than to try to engage me in intelligent debate, the atheist kept walking.
The evidence for God is seen all throughout creation. The problem of the atheist isn’t with his head but with his heart. And that is why the majority of my preaching deals with matters of the heart – attacking the root which is their sin.
Princeton University, New Jersey
Princeton is a very liberal Ivy League School that was in much need for a good rebuke. I’ve preached Yale University before many times but never had the honor of rebuking Princeton.
Yale University has a reputation for “Naked Parties,” which gives me an easy target to start my preaching against and capture their interest. But I wasn’t sure what kind of reputation Princeton had. So I started with my general rebuke I give to most universities in America today – I began rebuking drunkenness, fornication, and homosexuality. It wasn’t long before I got a heckler.
She was a liberal Jewish girl who didn’t think I was going about it the wrong way. But during our interaction she confessed to being pro-homosexual and pro-abortion. She also argued that there was nothing wrong with pornography. So it was no wonder she didn’t like me calling out sin and calling sinners to repentance!
This campus must not be accustomed to street preachers because somebody called the Police. The Police Officer said that we were offending people, as if that wasn’t part of free speech. I explained that what he was telling me was offending me. That made his point mute. Most officers don’t know what to say next after I bring that up. Being offended is totally subjective, so when a Police Officer tells me that I cannot offend people, I tell him that he just offended me. Since we were on the city property and were were only exercising our free speech, there was nothing he could do so he eventually left. He was only responding in the first place because somebody called the Police to complain.
Our day continued on for a few more hours. A good size crowd gathered around us. The students broke out a homosexual rainbow flag to protest and they had other unmentionable objects which only manifested their perversion. I was able to share my testimony of how the Lord saved me out of a life of drugs, alcohol, and crime, and I shared with them how they too could be “born again” and become “new creatures in Christ.”
Montclair State University, New Jersey
I had never before preached on this campus before but it had the perfect location right behind their student union. It was a large open square with a big staircase. It was perfect for open-air preaching.
That universities have a “rape culture” is something you often hear in the news today. The pastor I was with started off the campus preaching and gathered a nice crowd, so when he handed the crowd over to me I preached on “Tips to Help Avoid Being Raped While at College.”
This was a controversial topic which helped secure the students attention during the transition from the pastor to me. But it also gave me an opportunity to give the students some practical tips to take as a precautionary measure. For example, don’t go out partying with sinners, get drunk, and pass out.
Drunkenness is especially a problem for university and college students today and most people don’t realize how risky and dangerous getting drunk is. You make yourself extremely vulnerable when you get intoxicated, to a whole list of risky and dangerous things.
Eventually the campus Police moved us to a new location because the location we were at had been reserved for an event. There was another area with a stage that we agreed to go to but the big crowd we had gathered did not follow us there. It was later in the afternoon and we had to start from scratch gathering a crowd but we were eventually successful in doing so.
It started to snow during our time there in New Jersey. It got really cold really fast, but the preaching was so hot that nobody left! Praise God! Their blood was boiling in anger as we were pointing out their sins that nobody cared that it was snowing! We continued to preach the Gospel for a couple more hours.
