Do You Have to Repent of Your Sins to Be Saved? Is Repentance Necessary for Salvation? Heresy of Matt Slick

In one of the debates I had with Matt Slick of CARM (Christian Apologetics Research Ministry), we had this exchange:

Jesse Morrell, “I do believe you have to forsake your sins to be saved.”
Matt Slick, “Nope!”
Jesse Morrell, “But unbelief is a sin.”
Matt Slick, “Nope! Nope!”
Jesse Morrell, “Is unbelief a sin?”
Matt Slick, “Unbelief is a sin.”
Jesse Morrell, “Yeah, unbelief is a sin. Do you need to repent of unbelief to be saved?”
Matt Slick, “No.”

Matt Slick has since tried to “explain” his position on this matter, claiming that I am “misrepresenting him” when I quote that exchange. But all he has done is made matters worse by further confirming his heretical denial of repentance for salvation.

He said:

“Repentance is necessary to be a Christian, but not to become a Christian because repentance is the result of being a Christian, not the cause of being a Christian.” Matt Slick (Source)

Again Matt Slick said:

“I say that a person does not need to forsake his sin in order to be saved… I teach we must forsake our sin as Christians. But forsaking our sins is not what makes us Christians.  It is the result of being a Christian” Matt Slick (Source)

“We forsake our sins because we are Christian… We do not forsake our sins to become a Christian… Therefore, as Christians we ought to forsake our sin.” Matt Slick (Source)

Matt Slick is saying that you get saved in your sins and in your impenitence, and then AFTER you get saved in your sins and in your impenitence, you start to repent.

To restrain and confine repentance to “the saved” is serious error, as the Bible says:

Act 17:30-31 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Here we see Paul saying that God is calling the whole world of unbelievers to repentance. Paul was not preaching to believers in this sermon. He was preaching a message of repentance to a Gentile audience at Mars Hill.

Again we see that repentance is to be preached to ALL nations:

Luk 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Jesus Christ rebuked unbelievers for not repenting of their sins, even proclaiming damnation over them for their impenitence:

Mat 11:20-21, 23 “Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes… And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.”

Matt Slick says that repentance isn’t for the unsaved but for the saved.

Jesus Christ said the exact opposite of what Matt is saying:

Luk 5:32 – I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Repentance isn’t for the righteous (the saved), but for the unrighteous (the unsaved).

The saved have repented of their sins but the unsaved haven’t.

The Bible says that the saved are righteous, whereas the sinners are unsaved:
1Pe 4:18 – And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
Again, the unrighteous are unsaved:

1Co 6:9-10 “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”

Since the saved are righteous, the Bible says they need no repentance. Whereas the unsaved are sinners and therefore need repentance:––

Luk 15:7 – I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

The saved person needs no repentance because they are already righteous (justified). But the sinner, who isn’t saved, is the one who needs to repent. And all heaven rejoices when the unsaved sinner repents. Why? Because they are getting saved!

Matt Slick says the unsaved don’t need to repent – the saved need to repent. The Bible says the exact opposite: The righteous don’t need to repent, the sinners do.

The Bible says repentance from sin comes BEFORE salvation:

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38

“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.” 2Corinthians 7:10

“Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.” Acts 8:22

“And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Luke 24:47

“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”Luke 13:3

“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are you ways my ways, saith the Lord” Isaiah 55:7-8

“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy” Proverbs 28:13

“Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die” Ezekiel 18:30-31

The biblical principle is this: Sin is only forgiven AFTER it is forsaken.

Act 3:19 – “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord”

Here we see that before your sins are blotted out, you must repent and be converted. The Greek word for “be converted” is “ἐπιστρέφω” and it is translated as “turn (16x), be converted (6x), return (6x), turn about (4x), turn again (3x).”

Conversion, which happens prior to the forgiveness of sins, includes turning from sin (Acts 3:19) and turning to God (Acts 26:20).

The Bible promises mercy to those who forsake their sins, not to those who are impenitent over their sins. To the contrary, the Bible promises wrath for the impenitent, not mercy.

Mat 12:41 – The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here

Rom 2:5 – But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God”

Nowhere in the Word of God does God ever promise salvation to the impenitent.

The Bible says that repentance from dead works (sin) is a foundation that goes along side faith towards God.
Heb 6:1 – “the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God”
The Apostle Paul preached both repentance and faith to the Gentiles:

 Act 20:21 – Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus taught that harlots and publicans were saved because they repented at the preaching of John the Baptist:

Mat 21:28-32 – “But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

Evangelism is calling sinners to repentance, urging them to meet the conditions of salvation. This is why we read in the Bible:

Mar 6:12 – And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

The message of the gospel starts with “repent.” Jesus started his ministry with “repent!”

Mat 4:17 – From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Jesus said one of his primary purposes in coming to the world was to call sinners to repent:

Luke 5:32- I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

To call sinners to repent of what? Given the context, that is he calling sinners and not the righteous, he is calling sinners to repent of being sinners! Calling sinners to repent unto righteousness!

Matt Slick only confirmed his heresy with his “clarification” post.

The root of Matt’s heresy is a false definition of repentance.

Matt said:

“repentance is defined as following the Law” Matt Slick (Source)

He said:

“Romans 3:28, says that we are justified apart from the works of the Law.” Matt Slick (Source)

And since he defines repentance as a work of the law, he concludes we are justified apart from repenting of our sins.

He said:

“Repentance (forsaking sin) is not what makes us a Christian.” Matt Slick (Source)

Since Matt Slick defines repentance as a work of the law, and works are not the cause of salvation but follow as fruit of salvation, he says you don’t have to repent to get saved but you repent if you are already saved.

The Bible, however, does not classify repentance as a work of the law. The Greek word (μετανοέω) literally means to “change your mind.” A sinner is “carnally minded” which is “enmity with God” (Romans 8:7), and therefore to be reconciled to God the sinner must “change his mind” (repent of his carnal mind). To be carnally minded, in the Greek, means to be fleshly purposed – living for selfish gratification. To repent of the carnal mind is therefore a change of purpose or intention – from living for self to living for God.

Repentance is not a work, or a deed, or a work of the law. Repentance is a change of mind. When applied to sin, repentance is a change of mind about sinning. Repentance is not “keeping the law.” Repenting of your sins is simply a change of mind about breaking the law. You realize how stupid and wrong it is to sin and so you change your mind about doing it. A lifestyle of keeping God’s commandments comes after salvation as the fruit of repentance.

The Bible makes a distinction between repentance and works:

Act 26:20 – But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should REPENT and turn to God, and do WORKS meet for repentance.

Notice that the message God told Paul to preach to the Gentiles was “repent.” This is where the message starts. Unlike what Matt Slick is saying, repentance is for the unsaved to get saved.

Also notice the difference between “repent” and “do works meet for repentance.” Works follow repentance, known as the “works meet for repentance” (Acts 26:20) or the “fruit meet for repentance” (Matt. 3:8), but repentance itself isn’t isn’t a work.

Works follow repentance. But repentance itself isn’t a work. 

Matt Slick himself defined “heresy” as:

“a false teaching. It is a belief or idea that is in contradiction to orthodoxy. In the context of Christianity, heresy is that which deviates from standard biblical teaching.” Source

Given his own definition, we see that Matt Slick is teaching heresy. The Bible does not classify repentance as a work of the law, like Matt Slick does. To classify repentance as a “work of the law” is gross error and serious heresy. The logical  yet false conclusion of such a false and unbiblical classification is that “a person does not need to forsake his sin in order to be saved,” which the Bible says you must do in order to be saved!

Matt Slick’s heresy is two fold:

1. He says repentance is a work of the law.
2. He says you don’t have to repent to get saved.

Matt Slick calls himself a Calvinist but he seems to be alone in the Calvinist camp with his strange and unorthodox view that repentance is works of the law and that repentance is unnecessary for salvation.

A Lutheran Reformer named Melanchthon (1497-1560) said this:

“There are many who speak only of the forgiveness of sin, but who say little or nothing about repentance. If there is nevertheless no forgiveness of sins without repentance, so also forgiveness of sins cannot be understood without repentance. Therefore, if forgiveness of sins is preached without repentance, it follows that the people imagine they have already received the forgiveness of sins, and thereby they become cocksure and fearless, which is then greater error and sin than all the error that preceded our time.”

As we already saw, Paul who was the Apostle to the Gentiles (Rom. 11:13), was told to preach to the Gentiles repent, turn to God, and do works meet for repentance (Acts 26:20), and that He actually did testify to the Gentiles that they must repent towards God and have faith in Jesus Christ (Act 20:21).

Paul’s Gospel to the Gentiles included repentance from sin, so those who deny repentance from sin are preaching another gospel.

Galatians 1:8 – But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach another gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Beware of Matt Slick and his CARM Ministry, as he is preaching “another gospel” that was not the Gospel delivered unto the Apostle Paul.

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” 1 Timothy 4:1

Preaching to a Home Fellowship in Kentucky

During our ministry travelings this year I was able to speak to a small home fellowship in Kentucky. The question of, “Your Blessed Life Now! How to Live the Happy Holy Christian Life” was on my heart and mind. There are many passages in the Bible that speak on being blessed so in my teaching I went through many of these passages.

My key texts was, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Psa 1:1-2.

The key principle is that sin tends to misery and holiness tends to happiness. God’s commandments are good for our life whereas sin brings destruction and death. The way to live a happy life is to live a holy life.

“To bless” means “to make happy,” so when the Bible says, “Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities” (Act 3:26), this is saying that God blesses us or makes us happy by making us holy – turning us from our sins. Holiness is the key to blessedness. 

I also explained how regeneration is a re-genesis: bringing man back to the original state and condition that God had intended for us – a state of happiness through holiness. Sin and misery were not part of God’s intention and design for mankind. Sin and misery are foreign invaders which came into the world through the deception of the devil and Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil.

I admit that a beer fest is probably my least favorite place to preach the Gospel. I would personally much rather be on a university or college campus, when people are sober, to engage them in more intellectual discussion. But the Lord first preached to me in a jail cell and I’ve seen numerous people repent and get right with God while preaching on the street outside of bars and clubs. This beer fest needed some street preachers and so we stood up to fill that need!

We  had a nice megaphone and picked a location that was far enough away from all the different venders to try, to the best of our ability, not to bother them. After preaching for a little while on the bullhorn I was able to draw in a nice engaging crowd that circled around. One man blasted his musical horn for a while to try and drown us out but to no avail. I warned the sinners of God’s wrath and judgment and urged them to consider their ways and repent. Many stayed and listened for a long time as we preached.

Towards the end of the day we started marching around with our signs and bullhorn throughout the event. We wanted to cover more territory before we left. A police officer approached us and gave us a hard time at one point, saying that we were offending people by what we were saying. I told him that I was offended at what many of them were saying. Many of the people there were cussing and using profanity openly in the streets. Of course, the Officer had no problem with their public profanity, only our public preaching. In the end, he was unable to stop us from preaching and we continued to call sinners to repentance.

Bowling Green State University is a campus I had only preached on a couple times before. It always reminds me of the campus preacher who greatly inspired me named John. He used to preach this campus back in the 90’s.

This particular day I felt very fatigued with low energy and a sore throat. I don’t know if it was all the traveling and preaching wearing on me or if it was a cold. Either way I still gave it my all and after maybe 45 minutes of preaching, I had gathered a nice crowd that stayed for many more hours.

As the day progressed the crowd got closer and closer and circled around me. Only one man at least pretended to be so mad that he wanted to get violent, but others held him back. I found the general attitude of this campus to be very light hearted and mocking. They held signs that said, “Vader is Lord” and “The Death Star Cometh.” It was good that this campus got a good healthy dose of rebuke from the Scriptures.

After campus one day there was an art festival downtown the team wanted to preach at. I was told that this event attracted a lot of homosexuals. When I started preaching there was one man in particular who became very angry and started heckling me. When sinners get convicted, they respond either in anger or humility. He was choosing anger. But praise God there were five Police Officers standing right there watching. This helped him to control himself a little better. With all these Police Officers and this angry heckler, a decent size crowd gathered which is rare on the streets.

One homosexual came up to engage me in dialog. It seemed to me that he was trying to distract me but I continued to engage him directly about his sin. He said that he believed in God but was sure that he couldn’t change his sexuality. I explained to him how sexuality is in the brain and through his free will he can rewire his brain. God created us with the power of neuroplasticity – we shape and form the connections of our brain through our choices. I explained to him that if he would repent and start obeying God, his brain would heal.

I also explained to him the difference between temptation and sin. Temptation is a suggestion to the mind to gratify a natural desire in an unnatural way. Sin is a free choice of the will to obey the temptation. Temptation is not sin. I explained to him that he isn’t a homosexual because he has homosexual temptations, but because he chooses to embrace those temptations. If he would just say no to sin and yes to God, he would no longer be a homosexual. You shouldn’t identify yourself based on your temptations but by your chosen character.

Stranded in Tennessee Broken Down 

As we were traveling through the United States with our travel trailer, we hit the hills of Tennessee and that was too much stress on some of the old parts of our vehicle. Our vehicle overheated and was leaking coolant. We were stranded in a small town and had difficulty finding a repair shop for our SUV. When we finally did find a repair shop, they charged us an enormous amount of money just for replacing the radiator, which is hard on a missionary budget.

When we hit the road again with our travel trailer, we didn’t make it far before we overheated and started leaking coolant again. We took it back to the repair shop and found out that they didn’t replace any of the old hoses when they replaced the radiator, even though they charged us a fortune! Once they replaced all the old hoses and we hit the road again, we managed to get out of the hills of Tennessee without overheating anymore. We had to drive with our heat on just to keep the meter down. We finally made it home to Texas but knew something was still wrong. When we took it to our repair shop back home we found out that though they replaced the radiator and the radiator hoses, they didn’t replace the radiator cap! And we were still leaking that way! Praise God we finally made it home!

We Need a Move of the Holy Spirit to Bring Deep Conviction of Sin | Jesse Morrell

I remember so well how the Holy Spirit came to me in my prison cell, 18 years ago, and ripped the blinders off my eyes. For the first time, I saw myself as I really was – a rotten filthy hell-deserving sinner. I was dark, I was sinful, I was selfish, I was hateful, I was evil.
He ripped away from me all my excuses and showed me how I was responsible for my actions. I had no one to blame but myself, as I was making my own choices and all shifts of blame were falsehoods. I saw how wicked and evil I had grown to become and He convinced me that God would be completely justified in damning my soul forever.
And He didn’t relieve the weight of my guilt and conviction. He left me to roast in the oven of conviction for a few more months to prepare me for the gospel. I tossed and turned tormented inside that I was damned and I knew no hope or way of escape. He left me in conviction until I came to the point of genuine repentance – where I didn’t want to be a sinner anymore – and showed me through the Scriptures how I could be forgiven through Christ.
The problem with most evangelism today is that it doesn’t seek to convince the sinner of his exceeding sinfulness – that he is fully responsible for his sinful condition and that his eternal damnation would be justified and right. Modern evangelism just wants the sinner to briefly acknowledge that he has sinned and then immediately trust in Christ for salvation when there is no deep conviction or deep repentance. This is the reason for so many false converts in Christianity today.
In order to have a revival in America, we must see sinners crushed with the conviction of sin, to roast by the Holy Ghost in their guilt and deservingness of damnation. That is the proper preparation of the heart for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Then we will see sinners abandon their sinning and cling to Christ for salvation, to flee from the wrath that’s to come.

The Heresy of Pastor Steven Anderson Exposed – Beware of Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing! Jesse Morrell Refutes A Heretic


Pastor Steven Anderson of “Faithful Word Baptist Church” says that “repentance” is “works” and therefore “You don’t have to repent of your sins to be saved.” And “Repent of your sins is heresy.”

This is gross error! The Bible makes a distinction between repentance and works:

Act 26:20 – But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should REPENT and turn to God, and do WORKS meet for repentance.

Works follow repentance but repentance is not a work. It is a change of mind – in relation to sin it is a change of mind about sinning.

A change of mind about your actions always results in a change of works, which is why the Bible says:

Jon 3:10 – And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

Pastor Steven Anderson misunderstands Jonah 3:10 and falsely categories repentance as works and then concludes you don’t have to repent of your sins to be saved.


They say all you have to do is repent of unbelief to be saved, not any other sins in your life. But unbelief is a sin. So even Steven Anderson says you must repent of sin to be saved! The sin of unbelief!

The Bible does say you must repent of your sins as a precondition to forgiveness:

Acts 8:22 – Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee

Acts 2:38 – Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

And as we already saw, Paul who was the Apostle to the Gentiles was told to preach to the Gentiles repent, turn to God, and do works meet for repentance (Acts 26:20).
Galatians 1:8 – But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach anyother gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Communist Students Blast Horns to Stop Street Preacher Jesse Morrell

University of Cincinnati


The University of Cincinnati is a great campus to preach on. A couple years ago the campus adopted a “sponsorship policy” to keep unwanted outsiders off campus. Their policy required a student group inviting you and sponsoring you to campus in order to preach. Such a policy is nothing more than censorship. And since it is a public campus, such a policy is unconstitutional. But praise God, after I challenged their policy a couple years ago, I haven’t heard anything from them about it since. I warned them that they were setting themselves up for a free speech lawsuit and they backed down. The campus is now wide open for preaching without hinderance.


A good size crowd circled around for a couple hours as I stood on a wall and preached against a building, holding a Scripture sign. I could tell that these students are not accustomed to encountering conservative street preachers. They were shocked by some of the most basic biblical truth. Many were careless, some were interested, and some were convicted. Good seed was planted that in time could take root and bear fruit.

University of Louisville


The University of Louisville does not have the best free speech area. It is slightly off the busy walkway and they rope off an area for you to preach in. It takes a lot of energy to round up a crowd but after maybe 30 minutes of preaching, I was able to gather listeners. All you have to do is preach on some hot button topics until you get one person to engage you in public debate/discussion and then a crowd will follow.


Eventually the crowd moved in closer and closer until they were as close as possible. Another obstacle on this campus, besides the not so good location of the free speech area, is the time limits that they put on each speaker. I think each person is limited to about an hour and a half. Usually, that is only enough time to get started on a campus. But we had a good size team with multiple brethren so we each got a “permit” which gave us all back to back time slots. It is nice to be able to “tag team” preach with other brothers.

Northern Kentucky University


I had been preaching on campus for a very short time when this group of students went and got these blow horns to drown out my preaching. They called them “Horns Against Hate,” because I was preaching against sin. But they revealed themselves as a communist group on campus! The leader of the group even had a ring on with the communist symbol. Communism has never been the friend of free speech, that’s for sure.



They crowded around and blasted their horns at me but eventually the Police came and shut them down for causing a disturbance. Imagine if a Christian group showed up on campus with horns to blast groups they disagreed with, like the abortionists or homosexuals! They would be arrested! But liberals use tactics that conservatives would never be allowed to get away with.


Another attempt at shutting down my speech was their signage. One sign said, “Atheist for Tolerance” but their protest was itself intolerant of my preaching. Another sign, which they held in front of my face, said Jesus said nothing about homosexuality. Jesus did say that a man will leave his father and mother and be joined unto his wife and the two shall become one flesh. The thing about these hand held signs is that their arms get tired so if I just keep preaching long enough, the protestors hold their signs down.


We returned to the campus the next day but this time preached in their amphitheater. The amphitheater was unavailable the first day because of a Gay Rights rally that was going on – I believe a drag show. Though we had gathered a larger crowd then they did so their drag show ended up coming to our outreach. Anyways, when we first started preaching in the amphitheater it was very empty but slowly and surely a crowd started to form.


Nothing draws a bigger crowd on a secular campus than the bold proclamation of the gospel, especially if you boldly confront their sins. It wasn’t too long until the students filled the amphitheater, took their seats, and engaged us in dialog and discussion. The key with keeping their interest and attention is to answer their questions. Once the students realize that this is an open forum where they can expression their views and ask questions, they get hooked for hours. What an amazing ministry God has blessed me to be apart of. College Students gather around for hours and even days to talk about God and listen to the gospel!

We’ve been so busy traveling this year and working on our YouTube Channel and Facebook Page that I have gotten very behind in my email newsletters. Now that it is summer time and the campuses are on break, I plan on catching up.

The University of Alaska, Anchorage

One of the blessings I had this year was being able to open-air preach on the University of Alaska in Anchorage. Besides the outreaches that we have done on this campus the past few years, this university never see’s campus preachers. Usually when a campus is not accustomed to campus preachers the students act very aggressively and hostile. This crowd, as a whole, does the opposite. Most of the students just gather around and listen, enjoying themselves and asking questions. They are always a very well behaved crowd, with a few exceptions.

Like I said, there are exceptions. As you can see in the pictures above, one student tried to steal my banner sign. He snuck up behind me and grabbed the pole. But after a game of tug-of-war, I managed to keep the banner. The Police soon moved in to “talk” to the student. Of course, they don’t want to arrest students because that would affect the school’s tuition. There is an obvious conflict of interest. But there is a double standard because if I showed up on campus and tried to steal somebodies property, they would surely arrest me.

The same student who tried to steal my banner the first day joined the crowd the second day and actually listened and engaged me in dialog for a couple hours. He was much more receptive and attentive to what we were actually saying the second day.

During the couple days we spend on campus, I “tagged team” preached with my friend David who lives in Anchorage. He ministers a lot on the streets but joins me on campus when I am around. What was nice is that he had a sign we could use. Since I fly to Alaska from Texas, I am not able to bring any banners with me. So it is nice to team up with brethren who have signage as that greatly helps in getting the attention of a campus.

When we were on tour across the United States, I was able to stop in at Connecticut with my family so that my mother could visit with her grandchildren. We enjoyed some time at the local beach and I was able to make some encouraging teaching videos using the scenic backgrounds.

EEM Conference, Shipshewana Indiana

Once a year I speak at a small conference in Shipshewana Indiana. Shipshewana is Amish/Mennonite territory so we enjoy seeing the horse and carriages along with enjoying some great restaurants with Amish/Mennonite cooking! I was able to give two lectures to the conference.

My first lecture was on How the Holy Spirit produces Sanctification and Righteousness in the life of the believer. I explained how Sanctification is not a “Second Blessing” that comes after justification, but is a “First Blessing” in Salvation. Salvation is not merely deliverance from the penalty of sin but also from the practice of sin. True conversion is a total surrender of yourself to God, so salvation includes being “set apart” from sin and “dedicated” to the service of God. Sanctification begins at true conversion – at salvation.

I also taught on justification, showing from Koine Greek (Biblical Greek) that justification means to be made a righteous person, that justification is a change of moral character.

Many seem to teach justification as a license to sin. I’ve heard preachers say, “Justification is when God declares us to  be righteous while we are still actually unrighteous.” This is not the justification by faith that Paul taught.

Paul taught that God imputes our faith as righteousness and that our faith purifies our hearts, sanctifies our lives, and works by love. Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 that justification was a change of moral character.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 was my main text, where Paul said that the “unrighteous” (unjustified) shall not inherit the kingdom of God. He lists fornicators, drunkards, homosexuals, sodomites, etc. But then says in verse 11, “such were some of you” and then explains why a change of moral character has occurred – “but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified” he said. In other words, the reason the Corinthians were no longer unrighteous fornicators, unrighteous drunkards, unrighteous homosexuals, etc, is because they have been washed, sanctified, and justified. This shows that Paul’s doctrine of “justification by faith” most definitely included a change of moral character.

Evangelism Exhortation at a Mennonite Church

I was very honored to be asked to speak to a Mennonite Church in Indiana. This was a first for me. The Mennonites are a conservative Christian community of modest woman and hard working men. They have an Anabaptist history going back to the Reformation, where they were persecuted by both the Catholic Church and the Reformers. They have strong families and are a strong community but, like many churches in America, they are weak in the area of evangelism.

I preached to the congregation, “We are the light of the world, so if the world is in darkness who’s fault is it?” I exhorted them to be active in sharing the gospel because it alone has the power to save our country and change our communities. My message was well received and the pastor told me that next year he would like to have more Mennonite Churches get together for an “Evangelism Conference.”



I regularly receive emails from people all over the world who tell me how our ministry has blessed their lives. Many tell me that they repented of their sins and trusted in Christ under our preaching. Others tell me that they have started evangelizing and street preaching as Christians after being inspired by our ministry.

Help Us Reach the Nightlife With the Gospel!

Hey guys,

I need your help! I am working with an awesome group of young men in College Station TX that have a heart to reach the party nightlife with the gospel. We went out there one evening to preach but didn’t get too much interaction going on. What we need is a sound system!

I want to go out there with a Double Microphone sound system – one of the preacher and one for the heckler / person with questions. This is how I used to preach in the streets 15 years ago and it is the best way to get interaction on the streets (it’s easy to get interaction on a campus but hard on the streets).

I looked online and found a speaker system that looks perfect for only $200. That’s where I need your help! I am looking for some sponsors who will help donate to this cause.

If four people donated $50, or if two people donated $100, or if just one person donated $200, we’d be able to get the sound system!

If we get more than $200, we could get an even better system. But $200 seems to be the minimum for what I am looking for.

Going out there with a preacher/heckler microphone set up could really turn the whole nightlife upside down. There was lots of loud music but I found a huge spot with lots of foot traffic that was quiet, which would be perfect to set up at.

Also, I always thought that the preacher/heckler microphone set up made the best videos too (for those of you who are blessed by our open air footage).
