Do You Have to Repent of Your Sins to Be Saved? Is Repentance Necessary for Salvation? Heresy of Matt Slick

In one of the debates I had with Matt Slick of CARM (Christian Apologetics Research Ministry), we had this exchange:

Jesse Morrell, “I do believe you have to forsake your sins to be saved.”
Matt Slick, “Nope!”
Jesse Morrell, “But unbelief is a sin.”
Matt Slick, “Nope! Nope!”
Jesse Morrell, “Is unbelief a sin?”
Matt Slick, “Unbelief is a sin.”
Jesse Morrell, “Yeah, unbelief is a sin. Do you need to repent of unbelief to be saved?”
Matt Slick, “No.”

Matt Slick has since tried to “explain” his position on this matter, claiming that I am “misrepresenting him” when I quote that exchange. But all he has done is made matters worse by further confirming his heretical denial of repentance for salvation.

He said:

“Repentance is necessary to be a Christian, but not to become a Christian because repentance is the result of being a Christian, not the cause of being a Christian.” Matt Slick (Source)

Again Matt Slick said:

“I say that a person does not need to forsake his sin in order to be saved… I teach we must forsake our sin as Christians. But forsaking our sins is not what makes us Christians.  It is the result of being a Christian” Matt Slick (Source)

“We forsake our sins because we are Christian… We do not forsake our sins to become a Christian… Therefore, as Christians we ought to forsake our sin.” Matt Slick (Source)

Matt Slick is saying that you get saved in your sins and in your impenitence, and then AFTER you get saved in your sins and in your impenitence, you start to repent.

To restrain and confine repentance to “the saved” is serious error, as the Bible says:

Act 17:30-31 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Here we see Paul saying that God is calling the whole world of unbelievers to repentance. Paul was not preaching to believers in this sermon. He was preaching a message of repentance to a Gentile audience at Mars Hill.

Again we see that repentance is to be preached to ALL nations:

Luk 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Jesus Christ rebuked unbelievers for not repenting of their sins, even proclaiming damnation over them for their impenitence:

Mat 11:20-21, 23 “Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes… And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.”

Matt Slick says that repentance isn’t for the unsaved but for the saved.

Jesus Christ said the exact opposite of what Matt is saying:

Luk 5:32 – I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Repentance isn’t for the righteous (the saved), but for the unrighteous (the unsaved).

The saved have repented of their sins but the unsaved haven’t.

The Bible says that the saved are righteous, whereas the sinners are unsaved:
1Pe 4:18 – And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
Again, the unrighteous are unsaved:

1Co 6:9-10 “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”

Since the saved are righteous, the Bible says they need no repentance. Whereas the unsaved are sinners and therefore need repentance:––

Luk 15:7 – I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

The saved person needs no repentance because they are already righteous (justified). But the sinner, who isn’t saved, is the one who needs to repent. And all heaven rejoices when the unsaved sinner repents. Why? Because they are getting saved!

Matt Slick says the unsaved don’t need to repent – the saved need to repent. The Bible says the exact opposite: The righteous don’t need to repent, the sinners do.

The Bible says repentance from sin comes BEFORE salvation:

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38

“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.” 2Corinthians 7:10

“Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.” Acts 8:22

“And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Luke 24:47

“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”Luke 13:3

“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are you ways my ways, saith the Lord” Isaiah 55:7-8

“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy” Proverbs 28:13

“Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die” Ezekiel 18:30-31

The biblical principle is this: Sin is only forgiven AFTER it is forsaken.

Act 3:19 – “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord”

Here we see that before your sins are blotted out, you must repent and be converted. The Greek word for “be converted” is “ἐπιστρέφω” and it is translated as “turn (16x), be converted (6x), return (6x), turn about (4x), turn again (3x).”

Conversion, which happens prior to the forgiveness of sins, includes turning from sin (Acts 3:19) and turning to God (Acts 26:20).

The Bible promises mercy to those who forsake their sins, not to those who are impenitent over their sins. To the contrary, the Bible promises wrath for the impenitent, not mercy.

Mat 12:41 – The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here

Rom 2:5 – But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God”

Nowhere in the Word of God does God ever promise salvation to the impenitent.

The Bible says that repentance from dead works (sin) is a foundation that goes along side faith towards God.
Heb 6:1 – “the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God”
The Apostle Paul preached both repentance and faith to the Gentiles:

 Act 20:21 – Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus taught that harlots and publicans were saved because they repented at the preaching of John the Baptist:

Mat 21:28-32 – “But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

Evangelism is calling sinners to repentance, urging them to meet the conditions of salvation. This is why we read in the Bible:

Mar 6:12 – And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

The message of the gospel starts with “repent.” Jesus started his ministry with “repent!”

Mat 4:17 – From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Jesus said one of his primary purposes in coming to the world was to call sinners to repent:

Luke 5:32- I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

To call sinners to repent of what? Given the context, that is he calling sinners and not the righteous, he is calling sinners to repent of being sinners! Calling sinners to repent unto righteousness!

Matt Slick only confirmed his heresy with his “clarification” post.

The root of Matt’s heresy is a false definition of repentance.

Matt said:

“repentance is defined as following the Law” Matt Slick (Source)

He said:

“Romans 3:28, says that we are justified apart from the works of the Law.” Matt Slick (Source)

And since he defines repentance as a work of the law, he concludes we are justified apart from repenting of our sins.

He said:

“Repentance (forsaking sin) is not what makes us a Christian.” Matt Slick (Source)

Since Matt Slick defines repentance as a work of the law, and works are not the cause of salvation but follow as fruit of salvation, he says you don’t have to repent to get saved but you repent if you are already saved.

The Bible, however, does not classify repentance as a work of the law. The Greek word (μετανοέω) literally means to “change your mind.” A sinner is “carnally minded” which is “enmity with God” (Romans 8:7), and therefore to be reconciled to God the sinner must “change his mind” (repent of his carnal mind). To be carnally minded, in the Greek, means to be fleshly purposed – living for selfish gratification. To repent of the carnal mind is therefore a change of purpose or intention – from living for self to living for God.

Repentance is not a work, or a deed, or a work of the law. Repentance is a change of mind. When applied to sin, repentance is a change of mind about sinning. Repentance is not “keeping the law.” Repenting of your sins is simply a change of mind about breaking the law. You realize how stupid and wrong it is to sin and so you change your mind about doing it. A lifestyle of keeping God’s commandments comes after salvation as the fruit of repentance.

The Bible makes a distinction between repentance and works:

Act 26:20 – But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should REPENT and turn to God, and do WORKS meet for repentance.

Notice that the message God told Paul to preach to the Gentiles was “repent.” This is where the message starts. Unlike what Matt Slick is saying, repentance is for the unsaved to get saved.

Also notice the difference between “repent” and “do works meet for repentance.” Works follow repentance, known as the “works meet for repentance” (Acts 26:20) or the “fruit meet for repentance” (Matt. 3:8), but repentance itself isn’t isn’t a work.

Works follow repentance. But repentance itself isn’t a work. 

Matt Slick himself defined “heresy” as:

“a false teaching. It is a belief or idea that is in contradiction to orthodoxy. In the context of Christianity, heresy is that which deviates from standard biblical teaching.” Source

Given his own definition, we see that Matt Slick is teaching heresy. The Bible does not classify repentance as a work of the law, like Matt Slick does. To classify repentance as a “work of the law” is gross error and serious heresy. The logical  yet false conclusion of such a false and unbiblical classification is that “a person does not need to forsake his sin in order to be saved,” which the Bible says you must do in order to be saved!

Matt Slick’s heresy is two fold:

1. He says repentance is a work of the law.
2. He says you don’t have to repent to get saved.

Matt Slick calls himself a Calvinist but he seems to be alone in the Calvinist camp with his strange and unorthodox view that repentance is works of the law and that repentance is unnecessary for salvation.

A Lutheran Reformer named Melanchthon (1497-1560) said this:

“There are many who speak only of the forgiveness of sin, but who say little or nothing about repentance. If there is nevertheless no forgiveness of sins without repentance, so also forgiveness of sins cannot be understood without repentance. Therefore, if forgiveness of sins is preached without repentance, it follows that the people imagine they have already received the forgiveness of sins, and thereby they become cocksure and fearless, which is then greater error and sin than all the error that preceded our time.”

As we already saw, Paul who was the Apostle to the Gentiles (Rom. 11:13), was told to preach to the Gentiles repent, turn to God, and do works meet for repentance (Acts 26:20), and that He actually did testify to the Gentiles that they must repent towards God and have faith in Jesus Christ (Act 20:21).

Paul’s Gospel to the Gentiles included repentance from sin, so those who deny repentance from sin are preaching another gospel.

Galatians 1:8 – But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach another gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Beware of Matt Slick and his CARM Ministry, as he is preaching “another gospel” that was not the Gospel delivered unto the Apostle Paul.

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” 1 Timothy 4:1

Preaching to a Home Fellowship in Kentucky

During our ministry travelings this year I was able to speak to a small home fellowship in Kentucky. The question of, “Your Blessed Life Now! How to Live the Happy Holy Christian Life” was on my heart and mind. There are many passages in the Bible that speak on being blessed so in my teaching I went through many of these passages.

My key texts was, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Psa 1:1-2.

The key principle is that sin tends to misery and holiness tends to happiness. God’s commandments are good for our life whereas sin brings destruction and death. The way to live a happy life is to live a holy life.

“To bless” means “to make happy,” so when the Bible says, “Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities” (Act 3:26), this is saying that God blesses us or makes us happy by making us holy – turning us from our sins. Holiness is the key to blessedness. 

I also explained how regeneration is a re-genesis: bringing man back to the original state and condition that God had intended for us – a state of happiness through holiness. Sin and misery were not part of God’s intention and design for mankind. Sin and misery are foreign invaders which came into the world through the deception of the devil and Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil.

I admit that a beer fest is probably my least favorite place to preach the Gospel. I would personally much rather be on a university or college campus, when people are sober, to engage them in more intellectual discussion. But the Lord first preached to me in a jail cell and I’ve seen numerous people repent and get right with God while preaching on the street outside of bars and clubs. This beer fest needed some street preachers and so we stood up to fill that need!

We  had a nice megaphone and picked a location that was far enough away from all the different venders to try, to the best of our ability, not to bother them. After preaching for a little while on the bullhorn I was able to draw in a nice engaging crowd that circled around. One man blasted his musical horn for a while to try and drown us out but to no avail. I warned the sinners of God’s wrath and judgment and urged them to consider their ways and repent. Many stayed and listened for a long time as we preached.

Towards the end of the day we started marching around with our signs and bullhorn throughout the event. We wanted to cover more territory before we left. A police officer approached us and gave us a hard time at one point, saying that we were offending people by what we were saying. I told him that I was offended at what many of them were saying. Many of the people there were cussing and using profanity openly in the streets. Of course, the Officer had no problem with their public profanity, only our public preaching. In the end, he was unable to stop us from preaching and we continued to call sinners to repentance.

Bowling Green State University is a campus I had only preached on a couple times before. It always reminds me of the campus preacher who greatly inspired me named John. He used to preach this campus back in the 90’s.

This particular day I felt very fatigued with low energy and a sore throat. I don’t know if it was all the traveling and preaching wearing on me or if it was a cold. Either way I still gave it my all and after maybe 45 minutes of preaching, I had gathered a nice crowd that stayed for many more hours.

As the day progressed the crowd got closer and closer and circled around me. Only one man at least pretended to be so mad that he wanted to get violent, but others held him back. I found the general attitude of this campus to be very light hearted and mocking. They held signs that said, “Vader is Lord” and “The Death Star Cometh.” It was good that this campus got a good healthy dose of rebuke from the Scriptures.

After campus one day there was an art festival downtown the team wanted to preach at. I was told that this event attracted a lot of homosexuals. When I started preaching there was one man in particular who became very angry and started heckling me. When sinners get convicted, they respond either in anger or humility. He was choosing anger. But praise God there were five Police Officers standing right there watching. This helped him to control himself a little better. With all these Police Officers and this angry heckler, a decent size crowd gathered which is rare on the streets.

One homosexual came up to engage me in dialog. It seemed to me that he was trying to distract me but I continued to engage him directly about his sin. He said that he believed in God but was sure that he couldn’t change his sexuality. I explained to him how sexuality is in the brain and through his free will he can rewire his brain. God created us with the power of neuroplasticity – we shape and form the connections of our brain through our choices. I explained to him that if he would repent and start obeying God, his brain would heal.

I also explained to him the difference between temptation and sin. Temptation is a suggestion to the mind to gratify a natural desire in an unnatural way. Sin is a free choice of the will to obey the temptation. Temptation is not sin. I explained to him that he isn’t a homosexual because he has homosexual temptations, but because he chooses to embrace those temptations. If he would just say no to sin and yes to God, he would no longer be a homosexual. You shouldn’t identify yourself based on your temptations but by your chosen character.

Stranded in Tennessee Broken Down 

As we were traveling through the United States with our travel trailer, we hit the hills of Tennessee and that was too much stress on some of the old parts of our vehicle. Our vehicle overheated and was leaking coolant. We were stranded in a small town and had difficulty finding a repair shop for our SUV. When we finally did find a repair shop, they charged us an enormous amount of money just for replacing the radiator, which is hard on a missionary budget.

When we hit the road again with our travel trailer, we didn’t make it far before we overheated and started leaking coolant again. We took it back to the repair shop and found out that they didn’t replace any of the old hoses when they replaced the radiator, even though they charged us a fortune! Once they replaced all the old hoses and we hit the road again, we managed to get out of the hills of Tennessee without overheating anymore. We had to drive with our heat on just to keep the meter down. We finally made it home to Texas but knew something was still wrong. When we took it to our repair shop back home we found out that though they replaced the radiator and the radiator hoses, they didn’t replace the radiator cap! And we were still leaking that way! Praise God we finally made it home!

We Need a Move of the Holy Spirit to Bring Deep Conviction of Sin | Jesse Morrell

I remember so well how the Holy Spirit came to me in my prison cell, 18 years ago, and ripped the blinders off my eyes. For the first time, I saw myself as I really was – a rotten filthy hell-deserving sinner. I was dark, I was sinful, I was selfish, I was hateful, I was evil.
He ripped away from me all my excuses and showed me how I was responsible for my actions. I had no one to blame but myself, as I was making my own choices and all shifts of blame were falsehoods. I saw how wicked and evil I had grown to become and He convinced me that God would be completely justified in damning my soul forever.
And He didn’t relieve the weight of my guilt and conviction. He left me to roast in the oven of conviction for a few more months to prepare me for the gospel. I tossed and turned tormented inside that I was damned and I knew no hope or way of escape. He left me in conviction until I came to the point of genuine repentance – where I didn’t want to be a sinner anymore – and showed me through the Scriptures how I could be forgiven through Christ.
The problem with most evangelism today is that it doesn’t seek to convince the sinner of his exceeding sinfulness – that he is fully responsible for his sinful condition and that his eternal damnation would be justified and right. Modern evangelism just wants the sinner to briefly acknowledge that he has sinned and then immediately trust in Christ for salvation when there is no deep conviction or deep repentance. This is the reason for so many false converts in Christianity today.
In order to have a revival in America, we must see sinners crushed with the conviction of sin, to roast by the Holy Ghost in their guilt and deservingness of damnation. That is the proper preparation of the heart for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Then we will see sinners abandon their sinning and cling to Christ for salvation, to flee from the wrath that’s to come.

The Heresy of Pastor Steven Anderson Exposed – Beware of Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing! Jesse Morrell Refutes A Heretic


Pastor Steven Anderson of “Faithful Word Baptist Church” says that “repentance” is “works” and therefore “You don’t have to repent of your sins to be saved.” And “Repent of your sins is heresy.”

This is gross error! The Bible makes a distinction between repentance and works:

Act 26:20 – But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should REPENT and turn to God, and do WORKS meet for repentance.

Works follow repentance but repentance is not a work. It is a change of mind – in relation to sin it is a change of mind about sinning.

A change of mind about your actions always results in a change of works, which is why the Bible says:

Jon 3:10 – And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

Pastor Steven Anderson misunderstands Jonah 3:10 and falsely categories repentance as works and then concludes you don’t have to repent of your sins to be saved.


They say all you have to do is repent of unbelief to be saved, not any other sins in your life. But unbelief is a sin. So even Steven Anderson says you must repent of sin to be saved! The sin of unbelief!

The Bible does say you must repent of your sins as a precondition to forgiveness:

Acts 8:22 – Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee

Acts 2:38 – Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

And as we already saw, Paul who was the Apostle to the Gentiles was told to preach to the Gentiles repent, turn to God, and do works meet for repentance (Acts 26:20).
Galatians 1:8 – But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach anyother gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Look What Marijuana Actually Does to the Brain! Alaska Outreach Report

Once a year, for the past few years, my family has been very blessed with a mission trip to Alaska every summer.

There is a wonderful family that we fellowship with who live near the Anchorage area and they invite us all up there to stay with them.

Our kids get to play with each other once a year, we get some great fellowship, and I get to do outreaches in the local area.


Bus Depot

I have wanted to preach at this bus stop for the past four years but always preached in the nearby park instead.

I’d walk past this spot on my way to the park and always thought it was ideal for street preaching.

My open-air ministry started at the bus stops in Connecticut back in 2002.

Bus stops can be ideal for open-air preaching because people come and wait for the bus which gives you a captive audience.

The park where I normally preached looked pretty dead this day, not to mention that we’ve been physically attacked every time we’ve preached there in years past, so I decided to give the bus stop a shot.

Security (I’m pretty sure they were not Police) gave us a hard time for preaching there.

They tried to tell us to go across the street but we stood our ground.

They called their supervisor who requested that we put away our step stool.

Simply to “give them something,” I told them I’d put the step stool away.

That way, they felt like it was a win-win negotiation.

I can preach without a step stool no problem.

This woman recognized me from Youtube and requested a selfie.

This was a nicer experience than the drug dealers gave me at the park down the street I normally preach at – where we were used to getting assaulted.

That’s the great thing about the modern age of social media.

We are reaching the world without even going there.

You never know who is watching!

We continued to preach without our step stool no problem.

Lots of people were coming and going from the buses.

A few old men heckled me for a little bit.

The downtown is full of druggies and drunkards.

The weather is particularly nice for Alaska this time of year which gives us a great window of opportunity for street preaching.

A Park with a Stage

Besides the druggies and drunkards, the downtown also has a lot of tourists.

There are lots of stores for the tourists that sell gifts and souvenirs and also lots of places selling food and treats.

I’ve noticed that this park often has tourists eating food as there are nearby hot dog venders.

This park also has a stage which is perfect for open air preaching.

The acoustics are excellent.

People sat and ate their hot dogs as they listened to us preaching.

I’ve learned from previous years that this is the park where a lot of drunk natives hang out.

They usually heckle me and one time assaulted me with a walking stick.

My friend David joined me on these outreaches.

He had a few days off of work so we would be doing a lot of preaching together.

Bus Depot Again

We went back to the bus depot another day.

I had a new security guard give me a hard time.

He also told me to get off the step stool but this time I refused.

It was not in anybodies way. I saw no good reason to put it away again.

He stayed and heckled me for a little bit which showed the real reason he was giving me a hard time was personal – he’s a sinner.

Throughout the day lots of people were coming and going and we were able to engage with numerous people.

One man even stopped and listened for a while and I recognized the book he was holding under his arm. It was a book I read many years ago on evangelism.

Come to find out, he’s been studying evangelism for a little while.

He said he had heard of open-air preaching before but had never seen it done.

He was encouraged by our preaching and bold witness.

Tourist Info Corner

This particular corner downtown Anchorage always seems to get good foot traffic.

I’ve seen it many times in the years past but never preached there.

There are people handing out tourist information and I try to stay away from venders when I preach because they are usually the ones to complain to the police.

But we decided to give this location a shot this year and it worked out well.

There was one couple visiting Alaska from South America I think.

They sat and listened to our preaching for a little while.

Afterwards, they came up to us and told us that they watch our street preaching on YouTube!

Wow! Again, you never know who is watching! We are making a difference worldwide!



The ride between Anchorage and Fairbanks is something like a six hour drive but I’ve always heard it was beautiful.

I’ve wanted to make it up to Fairbanks in years past but never did. This year we committed to doing it. It was especially helpful that my friend David offered to drive us!

We had a few stops along the way. This was a beautiful river with a bridge, train tracks, and mountains. The Missionary Life sure is an adventure!

Bus Depot


There is a brother in Fairbanks who told me that he first started watching my YouTube videos to laugh at them. He thought it was funny and that I was “doing it wrong.”

But after watching the videos for a little while, he said he started getting convicted of sins in his life. A little while longer, he started repenting of those things. And now, he goes out witnessing with his family downtown Fairbanks!

It started to rain during our first evening there but we took out our umbrellas and went to the bus depot.

Numerous homeless guys who hang out in that area saw our bold Christian t-shirts and came up to us to talk.

We go to minister to them about their situation (physical and spiritual) and pray with them. They were very open to the things of God.

There is a public square downtown that gets lots of tourists.

My local friend said that he doesn’t believe anyone has ever done any street preaching in this park.

It’s great to think that we were pioneers in Alaska! Bringing open-air preaching to places it has never been before!

Like many other parks we’ve preached in Alaska, this one was also a popular hang out for the druggies and drunkards.

I started off the open-air preaching and some of the local drunk natives heckled me to get out of their park.

We moved locations within the park once the tourism started to pick up.

There is a particular statue in the middle of the park that tourist buses drop a lot of people off at to see.

My friend David was preaching to the tourists when apparently one of them called the Police.

The Officer arrived saying he was responding to a call about a “crazy guy yelling in the park.”

When he realized what we were doing, that we were just preaching the Bible in the public square, he left us alone.

I think it also helps that my friend David can tell the Police that he himself is a retired Police Officer.

The tourists looked like they were mostly retired people.

I have found that age group to be much harder to reach.

The age group that usually gathers around and listens to us are people in their teens or twenties.

Once people get older, they get more and more settled in their ways.

But when I preached that they were the generation that gave us the “Sexual Revolution,” and now their grandchildren likely have STD’s, that got some of their attention.

Out of the whole group, only one man actually heckled me and directly engaged me. The rest just turned their backs and ignored the preaching.


My local friend who was inspired by our videos stood up and open-air preached for the very first time!

Raising up other laborers is one of the good fruits of our ministry!

You never know how many people just one laborer is going to reach!


This man in the yellow jacket came up to encourage us.

He said he loved what we were doing.

Please keep Anchorage and Fairbanks in your prayers.

They both really need a move of God on the streets!


There is a town called North Pole, Alaska.

Now I can now officially say that I’ve been to the “North Pole” and bought the t-shirt.

I don’t normally wear t-shirts actually but this has become my favorite one.

Family Fun

I don’t normally get to travel for ministry with my family so when we do get to travel together, it’s nice to have some family fun days.


On a nature trial I saw this sign that warned people about the upcoming cliff.

I immediately thought of street preachers.

How come nobody ever complains to the park management that they are offended by this sign?

Yet when it comes to street preachers holding signs warning about the coming Judgment Day and Hell-Fire, people think that it’s different. No. It isn’t.

Street preachers are doing exactly what this Danger sign is doing.




The family was the first institution God established.

My family is absolutely my first and most important ministry.

How to Respond to Police Who Say Street Preaching is Disturbing the Peace

I have a friend in California named Doug.

He is a very faithful witness out on the streets every week.

And he says that it was my ministry that brought him to true repentance!

Every once in a while he brings me out to minister with him in California.

Redondo Beach, California

The first outreach we went to was Redondo Beach.

I had never been here before so we tried a few different preaching locations.




Our first location was on a fishing pier that also had some restaurants.

The foot traffic was light but a few people stopped to listen.

A local pastor joined us and a sister even flew in from Switzerland to be a part of the time this week!



We moved from the pier to the beach area and found it to be a better location. Sometimes you have to move around and try a few locations if you aren’t familiar with the spot.

Carmen, the sister who flew in from Switzerland, got to testify and witness to a good crowd of Teenagers.

They acted like they thought it was funny and tried to laugh and goof around, but I could tell that they were concerned over their sins and serious on the inside. They just didn’t want to look that way in front of their friends.

I like to take advantage of the scenic backgrounds as I travel to use for teaching videos.

My friend Doug took the team to the Hollywood sign where I was able to make a short teaching video.

On the topic of American Idols and God, my is called, “You Become like the Person You Worship.”

Universal Studios Citywalk, California


Doug said he wanted to try to preach at the Universal Citywalk.

Even though it is called “Citywalk,” it is actually not part of the city. It is private property.

But there is a law in California that says free speech rights extend to outdoor malls, even though they are privately owned.

We found a good spot to get started that wouldn’t bother any of the stores or restaurants.

I knew it would be a matter of time before we were approached by the security. Sure enough, about ten minutes later, security arrived.

The security felt certain that we “couldn’t do this here” but Doug was pretty adamant about his rights. He even knew the Law reference by name, regarding outdoor malls.

The security called in to the Administration building and sure enough, the admin said that the Universal Citywalk has a few “Free Speech Zones” that we could fill out paper work for. But it takes a few days to get approval.

That didn’t fit our schedule so we just moved on with our schedule.  It sure was worth a try though and now we know for future reference that this is a possibility.

Prayer Breakfast, California

Prayer can change the world.

What an honor and a privilege I had to speak to a men’s prayer breakfast on the power of prayer.

If prayer can change the world, then teaching on the power of prayer which can result in fervent prayers can also in effect change the world.


“Prayer changes things” is a popular but true cliche.

God was going to destroy Israel and make a nation out of Moses, but Moses interceded.

God told Hezekiah that he would die and not live, but Hezekiah prayed and God changed His mind.

Jesus said that He could pray for twelve legions of angels and be delivered from the cross, if He wanted to.

The course of the future is often determined by our praying or our failure to pray!


Prayer is so powerful that it has literally changed the mind of God, in many instances in the Scriptures!

Failure to pray is negligence of the worst kind!


Some of the greatest things that have ever happened in my life have come as the result of prayer.

I am not joking when I say that I have had such amazing answered prayers that it would make an atheist jealous.

I find it amazing when atheists claim that “There is No God,” because somebody has been listening to my secret prayers and has been answering them! Praise God!

The local pastor who joined us for a week of outreach also runs a “Men’s home” for men who struggle with drugs, alcohol, homelessness, etc, to help them get back on their feet.

They came to some of our outreaches and to this prayer breakfast.

The point that I wanted to hammer home to the prayer breakfast was this:

“Your future is determined by the prayers you pray or don’t pray.”

Downtown Wittier, California


We went downtown in a place called Wittier to witness to whoever we might find there.

As soon as we arrived we found some homeless men laying around in an alley way.

The pastor actually knew one of the men. He used to be part of his men’s home.

He had no shirt on so the pastor didn’t hesitate to take his own shirt off and give it to the man.

He also went to the nearby McDonalds and brought them all food.

It was a great witness of the love and kindness of God.

Carmen, the woman who came in from Switzerland to join us, got talking to a young man named Isaiah.

After talking about sin and salvation, Isaiah said that he wanted to pray with Carmen for salvation!

The pastor also happened to know a good church nearby that he pointed him to.

Please keep Isaiah in your prayers! He is young and in very formidable years.

Huntington Beach, California

It was back in 2001 that a friend of mine asked me what I was doing. I said I was searching the internet for some good sermons to listen to. He said, “I have a bunch of great sermons I’ll give you.” And he did! He gave me a CD with a bunch of great sermons. And a few of those sermons were by “Ray Comfort.”

I liked his sermons. They were teachings on evangelism. I had only been saved a few months, out of a life of drugs and crime. And I wanted to witness and share Christ with everybody.

In one of those sermons he mentioned, “open-air preaching” and my spirit got stirred up within me. Is that what I think it is? Is that…like… preaching out in the streets? The idea excited me! And a few months later. I did it myself for the first time.

And even though I’ve been traveling the country and open air preaching for many many years ever since, I’d never actually seen Ray Comfort open-air preaching in person before. But when I arrived at Huntington Beach on this trip, there he was. The sound of his voice open air preaching brought back many early memories for me, from when I used to listen to his cassette and VHS tapes.

In my early years, I heavily copied Ray Comfort’s style and methods.

Eventually, I grew into my own man and developed my own style.

And though we do have some disagreements on theology and methods, I was very happy to get him to sign my “street preaching Bible.”


The “Evidence Bible” is one of Ray’s products.

It is full of evangelistic commentaries and quotes from various individuals.

He even used a quote from me, taking something I said in my email newsletter back in 2005, and used it for commentary on Isaiah 30:10.

That was nice to see.

I had seen a few Youtube videos of Ray Comfort preaching at “Huntington Beach” so I was excited to preach there myself.

After listening to Ray preach, he eventually packed up his team and left. So we had the spot all to ourselves!

I was amazed at how easy it was to draw a crowd in this location! Lots of people would circle around as I started off by rebuking their sins.


Since Ray Comfort preaches in this location once a week, I didn’t expect to have any problems with the Police.

However, I was very surprised to have a Police Sergeant tell me that if people complain that my street preaching is “offensive” and “hateful” that I am now “disturbing the peace” and “breaking the law!”

I had to educate him on free speech rights, after I told him what he said offended me.

Since he offended me with what he was saying, I asked him if he broke the law and he didn’t know how to respond or answer that.

That’s how you respond to Police who say that street preaching is “disturbing the peace.”

He eventually backed down and we were able to keep preaching without further problems.

I think that because this was “The US Open of Surfing,” the Police were acting stricter than usual towards the street preachers.

Every day that we went out there, we were able to gather around good crowds that stayed for a long time.

I didn’t offer them free pizza.

I didn’t tell them how wonderful they are.

I didn’t hand out free money.

All I did was boldly preach the Word of God, telling them God’s honest truth about their sin and their need of salvation, and they swarmed around me to listen and ask questions.



Carmen from Switzerland also was able to gather a nice crowd around her as she witnessed and testified for the Lord.

She said that she goes out to the streets of Switzerland but is not used to crowds like these.

The people circled around her and asked lots of questions and she did a wonderful job of addressing them.

My friend Doug also did a great job of witnessing to the crowd.

Even though he is in a wheel chair, he goes out witnessing every week!

He sure puts the average church-goer to shame. No excuses!

One heckler said to me, “You are telling everyone else how to live!”

I asked, “You don’t think I should do that?”

She said, “No!”

I said, “Now you’re telling me how to live my life!”

The crowd laughed and one person said, “He’s smart.”

We had a lot of fun with the hecklers but also seemed to plant some deep seed into the hearts and minds of the many listeners.

Pray for all these seeds to take root!

Making a Difference for the Kingdom of God!

I am often asked, “How many people have actually come to the Lord through your ministry?”

Communist Students Blast Horns to Stop Street Preacher Jesse Morrell

University of Cincinnati


The University of Cincinnati is a great campus to preach on. A couple years ago the campus adopted a “sponsorship policy” to keep unwanted outsiders off campus. Their policy required a student group inviting you and sponsoring you to campus in order to preach. Such a policy is nothing more than censorship. And since it is a public campus, such a policy is unconstitutional. But praise God, after I challenged their policy a couple years ago, I haven’t heard anything from them about it since. I warned them that they were setting themselves up for a free speech lawsuit and they backed down. The campus is now wide open for preaching without hinderance.


A good size crowd circled around for a couple hours as I stood on a wall and preached against a building, holding a Scripture sign. I could tell that these students are not accustomed to encountering conservative street preachers. They were shocked by some of the most basic biblical truth. Many were careless, some were interested, and some were convicted. Good seed was planted that in time could take root and bear fruit.

University of Louisville


The University of Louisville does not have the best free speech area. It is slightly off the busy walkway and they rope off an area for you to preach in. It takes a lot of energy to round up a crowd but after maybe 30 minutes of preaching, I was able to gather listeners. All you have to do is preach on some hot button topics until you get one person to engage you in public debate/discussion and then a crowd will follow.


Eventually the crowd moved in closer and closer until they were as close as possible. Another obstacle on this campus, besides the not so good location of the free speech area, is the time limits that they put on each speaker. I think each person is limited to about an hour and a half. Usually, that is only enough time to get started on a campus. But we had a good size team with multiple brethren so we each got a “permit” which gave us all back to back time slots. It is nice to be able to “tag team” preach with other brothers.

Northern Kentucky University


I had been preaching on campus for a very short time when this group of students went and got these blow horns to drown out my preaching. They called them “Horns Against Hate,” because I was preaching against sin. But they revealed themselves as a communist group on campus! The leader of the group even had a ring on with the communist symbol. Communism has never been the friend of free speech, that’s for sure.



They crowded around and blasted their horns at me but eventually the Police came and shut them down for causing a disturbance. Imagine if a Christian group showed up on campus with horns to blast groups they disagreed with, like the abortionists or homosexuals! They would be arrested! But liberals use tactics that conservatives would never be allowed to get away with.


Another attempt at shutting down my speech was their signage. One sign said, “Atheist for Tolerance” but their protest was itself intolerant of my preaching. Another sign, which they held in front of my face, said Jesus said nothing about homosexuality. Jesus did say that a man will leave his father and mother and be joined unto his wife and the two shall become one flesh. The thing about these hand held signs is that their arms get tired so if I just keep preaching long enough, the protestors hold their signs down.


We returned to the campus the next day but this time preached in their amphitheater. The amphitheater was unavailable the first day because of a Gay Rights rally that was going on – I believe a drag show. Though we had gathered a larger crowd then they did so their drag show ended up coming to our outreach. Anyways, when we first started preaching in the amphitheater it was very empty but slowly and surely a crowd started to form.


Nothing draws a bigger crowd on a secular campus than the bold proclamation of the gospel, especially if you boldly confront their sins. It wasn’t too long until the students filled the amphitheater, took their seats, and engaged us in dialog and discussion. The key with keeping their interest and attention is to answer their questions. Once the students realize that this is an open forum where they can expression their views and ask questions, they get hooked for hours. What an amazing ministry God has blessed me to be apart of. College Students gather around for hours and even days to talk about God and listen to the gospel!
